I'm sorry I didn't get to know Firefighter Oelschlager before his untimely passing. On this terrible day I choose a life to learn about and mourn their loss of what they could have become, but also celebrate all the good they did. I'm sorry his children didn't get to know him better but they will know he was a good man. From a grateful Canadian.

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, I will walk 110 stories in Springfield, Missouri in memory of Douglas. Before I take that walk, I want to get to know Douglas and his family. What a legacy and what a man. As my son and I were talking about the stair climb and wearing my gear or not, he said to me "mom, it doesn't matter whether or not you wear your gear, you can never carry the weight they carried that day." That speaks volumes about the lives that were consumed that day but I know those first responders wouldn't want it any other way. I am honored to carry Douglas Oelschlager that 110 stories this Saturday and I am very thankful for his sacrifice. God spoke to me about the loss of a loved one and the hole they leave in your heart. If you allow them, they can leave you whole by absorbing into your heart the person they were and shining their light by talking about them and remembering them and honoring their life on this earth. RIP Brother

I have the privilege of wearing this "badge" with your picture and name on it today, as I climb the 110 flights of stairs. I didn't know you until today and I'll never forget you after today. A beautiful soul is not forgotten. And to live on in the hearts of others is to never die. You, sir, will live on forever.

It was a couple of years ago, but I had the honor of climbing the stair climb at Red Rocks in Colorado in honor of this hero. I would have left a note before, but I did not know there was a way to do so, now that I know, I figured it appropriate on this 15th anniversary.
Never, never forgotten. RIP Sir.

Yesterday, September 11th, 2014 I had the honor of climbing 110 floors in full turn outs in the 343 9/11 Memorial Climb representing you Mr. Oelschlager. As a fellow Fire Fighter you have forever given me strength! Your name was on the back of my jacket pushing me to the top, your picture and brief story was around my neck close to my heart, but now forever engraved in my heart! I will always honor you and our other fallen and continue my career with you all. With that, thank you is never enough! Till we meet again brother!

Hi, my husband climbed 110 floors yesterday with a picture of Doug clipped to his bunker jacket next to his heart. We took a moment before the climb to thank him for his dedication and pray for his family while bagpipes played 'Amazing Grace' in the background. I want his friends and family to know that people all over the country still remember and hurt for this tragedy.

Every day I read the heroic story printed in Newsday, LI Remembers 9/11 a Decade Later.

I didn't know Doug, but we went to the same grade school, Mt. View Elementary in Goleta (he was a few years behind me.) Now my own kids are going to Mt. View as well, and I've shared Doug's story of heroism with them so they too can be proud of a fellow Mt. View-Goleta alumni.

My name is Shelby Wilson. My son Colin is a firefighter with the Walls, MS Fire Department. On September 11, 2011 he participated in the Kansas City Stair Climb that honored the 243 fallen firefighters. 243 firefighters came from 6 states and each was assigned one name. Colin was assigned your husband's name and climbed 109 flights of stairs in his honor. Your brave husband's mission is now complete with help from my son. It is an honor. We shall continue to keep you in our prayers.

Douglas -
I had the opportunity to climb in your honor this morning in Denver during our annual 9/11 stair climb. I wore a lanyard with your picture close to my chest for all 110 stories of the climb. I had the opportunity to learn more about you this evening after the climb - what an incredible husband, father and firefighter. Truly honored to have climbed for you today.

I had the honor this morning of wearing Firefighter Oelschlager's name over the top of my own on my turnout coat as we climbed 110 floors to a rooftop ceremony in our annual Climb to Remember in downtown Sacramento. All 343 names were carried by 343 firefighters from all over the state of California. I placed his name with the others in a memorial sculpture and rang a bell in his memory and honor. I wanted those reading to know that his family, friends and co-workers remain in our prayers and that Firefighter Oelschalger's sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten. Having read a bio written about him, he was no doubt the father, husband, firefighter, and man that we are all striving to be. - Ryan, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District

I've written in this guest book for the past few years, and I wanted to keep the tradition alive. It's hard to believe that 10 long years have passed since Douglas was lost on this horrible day. 10 years ago, a few days after 9/11, we drew a card out of the communion basket at our parish here in Atlanta, GA. We were instructed by our priest to take the card home and pray for the soul of the name on our card and his/her family. We drew "fireman Doug" as we affectionately refer to him. His card sits in a glass frame in our home and we have prayed for him and for you, his family, for these past 10 years. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow!! I am so excited to have found this site and his picture. Peace be with you!

While doing a search on the internet, I discovered that my late husband's son was one of the brave firemen on 9/11. Doug and Daryl and I lost touch of each other after their father's memorial service in Orlando in 1980 and I later left Orlando and moved to Dallas. Doug was a kind and gentle spirit even as a child and I am very proud of him. I know Bill, his father, would also be proud.

Like Samantha Horne, I also have a metal bracelet with Douglas' name, and wear it with pride, and am often asked about it: it provides many opportunites to provide a testimony as to the sacrifice of those who gave their lives. Today, 9/11/10, we remember with sadness, that fateful day 10 Years ago, and recall the heroism of those involved in the rescues, and those who gave their lives. We will never forget. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those left behind. The Stars and Stripes flew proudly in Hull, England, today as a reminder, and in memory of Douglas and all those who lost their lives: For us too, here in the UK,(across The Pond, as to say) their sacrifices will never be forgotten. Our Prayers and thoughts are with Douglas' family. God Bless you all.

Last year I wrote in this guest book because Douglas' name was on a bracelet I received at my high school. And I knew I would be out all day tomorrow, so I wanted to write on here again, in remembrance of Douglas. I was never fortunate enough to have known him, but I cannot express the amount of sorrow I feel as I have to write on here in memory of him. What he sacrificed nine years ago for this country cannot be forgotten, and I will never let it be. I will put my bracelet back on tomorrow and I will carry this heroic man in my heart, now and always. God bless him and his family. I wish you only the best.

I am a fire fighter in north Denver Colorado. On September 11th, 343 firefighters from the Denver metro area as well as 6 different states climb 110 floors in full gear to pay tribute to our fallen brothers. Each firefighter is given a picture of a fallen brother from 9-11. I had the extreme privilege to carry FF Douglas E. Oelschlager up the Quest high rise tower with me. LET IT BE KNOWN.... WE WILL NEVER FORGET!

I also have a bracelet on my wrist, and on this bracelet is the name Douglas Oelschlager. Every year my High School passes out bracelets with the names of four people who were unfortunately lost on this day eight years ago. Even though I will never have the pleasure of meeting this wonderful and brave man, I will always carry him in my heart from this day forth. I just wanted to sign this to let his family and friends know that they are not the only one's thinking about Douglas on this day, and that they are not alone. The pain that I felt when reading his name was so deep, and I can't even imagine how it must feel to those of you who actually knew him. Even though I am sadden to have had Douglas' name on my bracelet, I am happy that it was there as well, for if it wasn't I never would have been able to learn about this incredibly heroic man. To his family and friends, I pray that you will stay strong this day and every other day. I hope you can find some sort of peace. God Bless You, and God Bless this man.

I have a bracelet on my wrist:
It says "DOUGLAS OELSCHLAGER 9-11-01 FDNY LADDER 15"
I have worn it continuously for the last 7 Years. I work with young people. They often say, "What's that on your wrist?" I take it off, give it to them to read out aloud for themselves. I have lost count the many times his name has been read out aloud: every time, it is read, it is another remembering. It inevitably provides an opening to tell them the story of fire-fighters like Doug, whose bravery that day, knows no bounds. His ultimate sacrifice will not be forgotten. As we come close to the 8th Anniversary, our thoughts are with Doug's family and relatives - that even here, in England, we remember his sacrifice, and honor his memory. We remember all those who lost their lives that day - may God grant them all an everlasting Peace. As we get ready to hang out The Stars and Stripes in our own garden here in the UK, on Friday, Our thoughts and our Prayers are with you all.

I can't imagine the loss that Teri Oelschlager, the mother of Doug felt after losing her son in such a tragic but heroic way. My message to her and Doug's wife and children is written in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 2:9

To the friends and family of Doug O.,and those who never knew him,
I am lucky enough to have grown up with Doug (and his brother Darryl) in Goleta, CA. I hung out with him just about every day from when he was five years old until he moved to Long Island when we were in high school. For those who didn't know Doug, the solitary picture of him from the FDNY doesn't capture the sense of humor, the smile, and the deep sense of honor that he carried with him even as a young boy. When a man dies, people tend to remember him better than he truly was, and that's probably as it should be; but Doug was a great kid, and he was a great man. He gave more than anyone else I know, and he was always laughing that Dougie laugh. Everything he did he did 100%. Doug's dream as long as I can remember was to be a firefighter; to help people in need.
When Doug was taken in that building, a huge part of my childhood was taken too, and my loss was just mirrored and amplified by the many others who knew him.
I will see Dougie once again in Heaven, and there I'll thank him for being a hero, long before he ever stepped into that crumbling building.
Sue, I want you to know that my family still says a prayer every night that God will give strength and comfort to you and the girls.

Dear Oelschlager Family, I recieved Douglas' name braclet thru the Macy collection for Firefighters lost at the WTC on 911. I wear it in honor of his supreme sacrifice and as a reminder of what Fire Fighters are all about. I know he was selfless in his actions and he is a hero to his family and all Americans. I have been a Fire Fighter for 22 years and now my son follows in those same footsteps. I can appreciate that Douglas would probably say,"I'm just doing my job." I feel quite sure he would dismiss his actions to this common thought instead of claiming it as an act of heroism....Thank you Douglas for just doing your job....You are a HERO....to Americans, FDNY, and to your loved ones. God bless you and your family. May God give them your strength in the future. Your brother Fire Fighter - Brad Matthews

Dear Douglas,
It takes courage, compassion and caring for your fellow man to become a firefighter. How well we all know that, since the beginning of time, but even more so, since September 11. God Bless you for making the ultimate sacrifice and may you rest in peace with God. I know you are there in Heaven, because that is where Angels live.

We thank Douglas for sharing his life with others as a firefighter. Such a profession comes with a very warm, caring, generous heart and we thank him for sharing his heart with others. We are very sorry for your loss of Douglas. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
