I had the privilege of working with Jay and his brother Lance as a lifeguard at Sandy Hook, NJ many years ago. I remember how much joy and happiness they brought to everyones life. They always wore a smile and offered a helping and for those in need. Both brothers gave everything they could and that fateful day back in September 2001 I grieve the loss of Jay and on this day of remembering fallen firefighters, I say a prayer for both Jay and his brother Lance and their families. You will always be remembered Jay.

I knew him as "Jay", one of the twin lifeguards at Great Kills Swim Club. I was friends with Jay & Lance during their time working at GKSC. I eventually moved to Florida and lost contact - but was saddened to hear of Jay's passing on September 11, 2001. On this, the 14th anniversary of 9-11, I pray for Jay, his family, friends and our great nation. Thank you to the Ogren family for your dedicated service and God Bless.

Jay, I never met you, but worked with your brother Bobby. In 2001 I carried your helmet plate with me in the NYC Marathon in your honor, since you couldn't be there. Bobby told me you were registered and looking forward to running. I will carry your name with me this coming Sunday in the Miami Marathon. I wish you were still with us to do these things yourself. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Take care of Bobby. We miss him too.

I can remember much younger time with you and your brother. Catholic school. St. Joseph St. Thomas. You two were the ones all the girls wanted. I think of you on every anniversary, and still am trying to find a way to get in touch with your brother, Lance. See if you could tap him on the shoulder and throw him a hint that I've been looking and trying to get in touch with him. I can only say - I'm proud to have been one of those girls that did nothing but abuse and bother you two. My thoughts and prayers are always with you and Lance.

I remember you today as if it were the 1st we meet at the NY County DA's officer where you were a paralegal and I was the secretary in Trial Bureau 60. An overall good guy, who was always smiling even on the hectic days. You were taken from us too soon, but I know you are looking down on us and keeping us safe. God Bless your family. I remember helping you type up a report using carbon paper & what a pain it was for both of us, but we laughed it off at the type-writer & got it done. To the Family of Joseph,
I am a firefighter/EMT from Evergreen, Colorado (population 40,000). We are a small volunteer department in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. We were invited to participate in the Denver tribute to the heroes of September 11. This is the fourth year of the event with 343 firefighters climbing 110 flights of stairs in full bunker gear to honor our fallen brothers and sisters. This year, we were all given a small picture of a firefighter who gave all. I had the honor of receiving Joseph’s picture. My thoughts and prayers were with you, the family, but also with Joseph.

I worked in the Manhattan District Attorney's office with Joe. What a great guy!! Always a smile. I remember he had a friend who's dad was a firefighter and was killed in a fire started by an arsonist. He was so wonderful to that family. So concerned and so compassionate. On September 11th I was walking up 2nd Avenue to get away from the towers and saw so many firefighters speeding down towards them. On motorcycles, packed into fire engines and cars. It is something I will always remember. I knew Joe was a fireman but didn't know what company he was with. What a shock when I heard he was lost. I think of him and of his family often. I hope they find peace. My prayers are with all of you.

I recently purchased a 9.11 memorial bracelet engraved with the name of one of the NY Firefighters who were lost in the Trade Towers disaster. Joseph's name was on the bracelet I received and I quickly did a search to find out more about him. Reading of him brought a period of sadness to me but now I am very proud to wear the bracelet, tell others of its purpose and relate what I know of the brave young man whose name is engraved on it.

To the Ogren Family,
My husband is a firefighter here in Northern California and we were saddened by the events that took place on Sept. 11th and the lost of so many firefighter who gave their lives to help save others. AT the time of this tragic event our dog had just delivered a litter of puppies for an organization called Canine Companions for Independence. These are dogs that are raised to help assist people with handicaps such as Guide dogs for the blind. The litter is given a letter from the Alphabeta to identify/track the litter. The letter "O" was the litter we were given and we went straight to the firefighter list. We hope this honors his name and will continues his memory in service to others.
Sincerely, Jeff & Karen Buscher

Dear Ogren Family,
As I watched a tribute to our fallen fire fighters on September 11th I was caught by suprise to hear the name Joseph J. Ogren. I have not done extensive research on my own family tree but know Ogren is not so common a name. I thusly felt compelled to write and express my sincere condolences regarding your loss of Joseph on behalf of myself and my family. I'm proud to share the same name as one of the people I consider to be one of the greatest Heroes of my generation. To loose one's life in the attempt to save the lives of others is as great a sacrifice as one could possibly conceive. Today I walk a little taller and with a renewed sense of family and country, I feel I owe this to Joeseph.
Yours in name and spirit,

To the Ogren Family,
I purchased a 911 bracelet with Joseph's name on it. I was a firefighter in large borough in Pennsylvania before joining the US Army. My fellow firefighter's and I were always aware of the dangers when we responded to call's and in the back of our mind, we knew it could be our last. Joseph knew the dangers as well, unselfishly serving his fellow New Yorkers. I never knew Joseph but I would like to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences for such a tragic loss. To Jay - A Hero among Angels. This is for you:"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. I know how much we hurt and miss our loved ones but if Joe could, this is what he's say to you- -
When I must leave you for a little while - please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile; and for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; and never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky. Helen Steiner Rice

Dear Lance:
We swam together at St. John's for a brief time. I believe that you were a freshman when I was a senior. My husband, Tom Sartorio also swam for SJU, but graduated the year before me.
I recognized Jay in the NY Times and could not believe my eyes. I am deeply sorry. I, too lost someone very special. My 21 year old nephew, Tommy Ashton was working his second day on the job in tower 1. We have reason to believe that he escaped the building (even though his job was on floor 95) and was helping others outside when he was killed. My sister and our entire family is devestated. I believe that someday our pain will ease a bit, but I know that not everyone in my family is as confident as I.
I wish you and your family my sincerest sympathy. All my love...

Dear Ogren Family and Carrie Bergonia,
Close to 4 months later, words still cannot describe my sorrow for your loss. I hope my fond memories of Jay will help in some small way. I will always remember Jay's infectious smile, his love of music, and quite simply his dedication to making sure he got the most out of life. I have many great memories of good times that I shared along side Jay: running in the NYC marathon, FDNY races on Staten Island, and most of all just hanging out and laughing along side him at various parties.
We all want our lives to mean something. We all have jobs to make a living to provide for ourselves and to provide for our families, but beyond that, we want to be productive citizens and want to make a positive impact (however little) on our place in humanity. We can no doubt say that Jay Ogren's life made a difference. And that while it is a tremendous tragedy that his life is over at age 30, he experienced a great deal of the good things that life has to offer. He experienced things that people that live to age 90 never experience. He gave his life to save others. Is there a better way to make a difference than that?
I will always consider Jay a friend. I will never forget him and what he meant to a countless number of lives. Thank you for giving the world Jay Ogren.

Dear Ogren Family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved son and twin. There can be no greater sorrow than losing someone who is a "part" of you.

I believe in Angels and I know your beloved Joseph is living in peace with God, because that is where Angels live. Rest In Peace, Joseph!

We thank Joseph for dedicating his life as a firefighter. Helping others the way a fireman does shows the world that he had a very warm, caring and loving heart. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Joseph. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
