I never knew Billy, never met him.
His wife asked me to pack his belongings before I prepared to paint the family´s new house in WestHampton.
It was then I began to realize who Billy was not just to his son, but to all Americans who took time to make quilts, make mementos to say thank you.
I promised to remember Billy Lake, rescue 2, Brooklyn and still do

I am a retired Chicago Fireman and I was in New York after the 11th of September. I went to many memorials of Fire and Port Authority personnel. It's now been twenty years. I just wanted David's family to know I have worn a memorial bracelet with his full name and his Fire company on my right wrist for years. David Lake is with me everyday . I have only taken his bracelet off 4 times for surgeries.{My wife wore the bracelet until I got out of surgery} This is a sad day and for what it's worth I keep David in my prayers everyday. God bless you, David and the other 342 members that passed on that day. Paul Schacherer

Billy,
Remembering your service. Your namesake, TSA Canine Llake born 09.11.06 retired this year after 9.5 years of service as an explosive detection canine assigned to Honolulu, Hawaii. He ended his career with exemplary service, and was loved by all he served. I was honored to have him as my partner since he was 17 months old. His work ethic and abilities were amazing. You would be proud. Always in our hearts.

Aloha to all that knew and loved Billy Lake. Billy now has a TSA Explosive Detection K9 named "LLake" as his namesake. LLake was born and bred into the TSA Explosive Detection Puppy Program at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, created after 09/11. LLake is a handsome yellow labrador retriever, weighing in at 62 pounds with amber eyes. I am in awe of his ability and blessed to be his handler. LLake was born on September 11, 2006. As we remember all those that sacrificed their lives, know that their missions carry on and special memories stay with with their loved ones forever.

Hi, I can't believe another year has passed. I don't know where the time goes. Kyler was brave and reposed as he read from the list names of those who rest with you. And he was so proud to read your name and to say I Love You. Somehow being where you were made him happy. I know you were there giving him support, and I know you heard the thunderous roar of the hundreds of bikers who loudly and honorably rode down West Street to pay their respects to you. I know that made you happy. Kyler and I could not help but cry as they passed. We love and miss you. I know you are there watching him play football this year, what a tackler, huh? He is your son. We will never forget you Brother Bro. Love your eternal partner, Sister Sis.

I didn't know Billy, but I remember seeing him on the show the "Bravest" which was on for a while on Sunday nights. At the time I was watching it, I didn't even realize that he was one of the heros lost at the Trade Center, but there was something about him. He just had an aura about him that made me feel he would be a wonderful person to know. After reading about him, I came to realize that my feelings were correct. He was a great guy, great fireman and friend and most importantly a great dad. A while back, the gym I belong to had a memorial run for Billy and Jimmy Riches (who is a distant cousin of mine). I attended the run to help out and would have loved to meet some of his family just to tell them what an impression he left on me without even meeting him. September 11th is something that never should have happened and will never go away. It is senseless that so many wonderful people were taken away from their families. All we can do is pray for those who were lost and each other. Hopefully all those who are gone will be watching over us and can help make this world a better place.
Billy and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers always. If Kyler grows up to be anything like his dad, he too will make a wonderful contribution to society.
God Bless you all!!

My prayers are with the LAKE family in this time of reflection and sorrow. I knew Billy from the neighborhood (Bay Ridge and OLA) and always respected him. I couldn't think of a better person to become a firefighter than Billy becasue he really cared about people. I don't think he would be comfortable with the term "HERO" but we all know there is no one more deserving of that title. I pray that 3rd Ave is renamed in his honor so his legacy lives on and he gets the recognition he truly deserves.
GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU

I knew Billy from Bay Ridge. He was a few years older than me and use to deliver medicine for Powells Pharmacy. Our apartment building had four stories and no elevator. It caught fire one day when Billy was on his medicine delivery rounds. He rushed in and carried out to elderly neighbors of mine from the third floor who could not make it out. He was able to save one, however, one was to old and overwhelmed by the smoke.
I moved not long after that and I never new what happened to Billy until I came upon his orbituary. It makes sense that he became a fireman after his experience as a teenager. I remember telling him how cool it was that he ran into the building to save those people. He just laughed and shrugged at me.
I am very saddened by his death and my condolences go out to his family.
You were the bravest of the brave.

To the family of William Lake:
I ordered a memory braclet and asked for just a name of a hero and when it arrived I got goosebumps.
It said William Lake FDNY
You see, my husband's friend and a groomsman in our wedding was David Lake and had lived in NY for a time when we sort of lost track of him. Later he moved back to Michigan and had a second family. A few years later he was killed in a tragic car accident. His brother is also named William Lake so when I received the braclet and looked up a picture of William David Lake I was amazed how much he looked like our friend. Could it have been his relative??? I cherish the braclet and wear it every day. Last week in our local paper was an article on William Lake and his wife Dorothy telling how he had also been to the Murray Building in OK. I again felt that this William Lake was trying to tell me something..could he be related to our friend? Isn't it odd the article would be in our local paper hundreds of miles away? I see now that William was older than what I thought but still I will think of him as "My William Lake" May God bless his soul and keep His arms wrapped tightly around William's family and if this William and our David are related I am sure they are together again in heaven.

Billy is the best friend I've ever had. A fellow 3 stooges fan. The many good times we had together far outweigh the bad. Where does one start to explain how someone meant so much? Billy could let you in,or shut you out. When you were in..there was no place else you'd rather be,,And when you were out..The only place you wanted to be, was back in.
Billy had his own way. And to be a true friend, you had to accept that.
There was no one you wanted on your side more than Billy.
Billy had a favorite saying; " I ain't got no pals!"
You were wrong Billy. You had more "pals" than anyone I ever knew.
I'll miss you always.I will never forget the great and trying times we shared. I'm glad that for however so briefly..I was a "pal".
Rest,my friend.Rest. -wheat-
