Kenneth Marino Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 5, 2001.
A Devout Baseball Fan
Kenny Marino was a Mets fan and a Seattle Mariners fan, but his all- time favorite ballplayer was Ken Griffey Jr.

So Katrina Marino, his wife, e-mailed the Cincinnati Reds wondering if Griffey could hit a home run for her husband because he would be "looking down with a big grin."

On Sept. 25, Griffey, in his second at-bat against Philadelphia, obliged Mrs. Marino. He said it would always stand out as one of the most memorable he had hit.

The bat was later given to Mrs. Marino and her two children, Kristin, 3, and Tyler, 1.

Firefighter Marino, 40, was with Rescue 1 in Manhattan. His family happened to visit him at the firehouse the morning of Sept. 11, shortly before the summons to the trade center. Firefighter Marino whispered into Kristin's ear, "If you are a good girl, when I get home I will get you a prize ‹ a Wizard of Oz prize."

A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Marino found the prizes, a Dorothy doll for Kristin and a Scarecrow for Tyler.

And there was a Fireman Santa Claus ornament for Mrs. Marino.

She mentioned those treasured final prizes at the memorial service for him on Long Island. As Rescue 1 led the mourners out, the organist played "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

The members of Rescue 1 had to smile. They knew that was so Kenny.

REST IN POWER KING!! I saw your daughter on snap honoring your memory and came to this page to learn a lil more about you from your friends and families comments. As someone who was just a kid during the time of your passing, I've used these years to learn about the heros that helped saved so many lives that day. I will keep your memory alive by mentioning your name when I talk to my students, especially when bravery and hero's are brought up.

God Bless You and your family Mrs. Marino!!

09/07/2024 - This morning, I participated in Baltimore City’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, and each participant received a clip-on badge with a picture of a firefighter who lost their life that day; Kenneth was on mine. I am proud to have walked those 2200 steps and to honor and carry on Kenneth’s great legacy!

It's 7/13/23 and I'm sitting on a bench in a memorial gazebo near the Mill Ponds in Monroe, NY. Kenny's name is listed as one of the beautiful souls lost on that horrible Tuesday morning. I had to look up his name and read his story. My condolences to his family. We shall NEVER forget.

It has been a couple days since 9/11. I am 15 years old and I go to Mount Vernon High School in Indiana. I just came across this memorial page, and I have read every single message since 2001. To his kids, from kid to kid, I want to say you're never alone. Your father is watching over you, and I know he loves and miss you with all his heart. My prayers go out to your family.

There's nothing I can add that hasn't already been repeated multiple times. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Thank you to your family for their sacrifice - along with multiple prayers always. So sorry for the grief that 9/11 brought to everyone affected. I believe 9/11 should stand as a National Holiday of Remembrance.

Every year as September 11 approaches, I think of Kenneth and his family. I had the honor of wearing his badge while doing 110 flights of stairs at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. I will be sharing his legacy today with some 4th grade students in Wisconsin. Never Forgotten.

Your sister gave a wonderful verbal memory of you today at the memorial service. I Googled your name to learn more about you. Thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice. I pray this nation never forgets and ask God to richly bless your family.

Today is a very sad day for the Marino family. I myself was consumed with thoughts of my cousin, Kenny. I found a picture of you sitting on my moms lap. You were the cutest little boy with your blonde hair. It's hard to believe 14 years have passed. My love and heart goes out to your family.

Dear Kenny,

Another year has passed and again we are here to face this dark day in our lives. I still can't believe that its been 11 years already. I saw a picture of your daughter on Facebook yesterday. She has grown to be a wonderful young lady that I know you would be very proud of. There was a picture in last years Time magazine of Katrina, Kristin and Tyler in it. The kids have really grown up and I know how proud you will be of Katrina on the wonderful job she has done raising the kids, they look teriffic. I hope that all is well with you and that you are resting in peace. Just want you to know that I will forever keep your memory alive for as long as I am alive and I will always share your story of your heroic acts on 9/11/01. Rest in Peace my brother and may God continue to bless Katrina, Kristin and Tyler. Good bye for now until we meet again.

As we approach this time every year, our thoughts always turn to memories of Kenny. Recently, Tony and I were in Florida retrieving old family photos, and found many pictures of Kenny when he was a very young boy staying with me and my family in Brooklyn. Like his son Tyler, he was a beautiful boy as a child. He will be forever in our hearts..

I made a copy for myself and I am giving a copy to Chief Richie Corbett, who is going to hang it up at the fire house. Enclosed , please find a picture that I took of Kenny's name. God Bless you and your children. If you ever need ANYTHING, please feel free to reach out to me. I miss Kenny very nuch each and everyday and I am honored to say that I work with him, served the people of Long Beach, N.Y. with him and even more honored to be able to call him a brother and friend.

To the family of Kenneth Marino,

I am writing to you because for this past week of school, my class has been studying about what happened on September 11, 2001. As part of a school project, I am writing to tell you and your family that we are sorry about your loss and we will never forget what happened to you, and your family, and the many other victims of Nine Eleven. I hope that tragedies like this never happen again to our country or any other country.

My class and I are writing letters to 9\11 victims and I thought That Kenneth Marino's story was the most inspiring. I didn't Know him but I imagine he was really nice man. Itmust have been really nice for him to see his kids one last time. I'm sure he saved a lot of people before he died.

Our town of Broomfield, Colorado has a nice area to help us remember 9/11. On the tenth annual day of remembrance of that sad day for Mr. Marino's family we also had a healing field with flags and little tags with names of the victims. I chose one and brought it home. It had the name of Kenneth Joseph Marino. I am 51. I wish Kenny had been able to come down from that tower and enjoy this last decade with me. I am sorry he did not. I hope that strength for his wife and children and parents can come from many sources to lighten their burden in the years ahead. Thanks, Kenny, for being a good man and a hero on that sad day.

Dear Marino family,
I read your story in Newsday, and I wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. You are very fortunate that you visited Kenneth the day of 9/11. It is amazing how you can cope without him and how Mrs. Marino didn’t remarry. Good luck.

STAR BASEBALL

January 19, 2009

As many of you know, one of Kenny's favorite hobbies was Strat-o-Matic baseball and playing in these tournaments. Every year STAR Baseball, the group that runs these tournaments, gives out an award which was originally called the Sportsmanship Award but since 2002 it is called the Kenny Marino Award.

This year's winner was Shannon Harrison, a gem of a person from Oklahoma City. Kenny never met him but I'm sure he would like him.

Our best to the family.

My daughter, Jenna, will be telling your story tomorrow in school to her class and I will be there to let them know that you are a true American Hero, I miss you and I pray that your soul has found true peace. Till we meet again my brother, may you rest in peace and my God bless you and your family. This is your 7th year in Heaven and I can't believe that it has been that long.

I had the pleasure of playing with Kenny in the USA Strat Baseball League -- we both managed teams in a computer-simulated league. I always tried to trade for Ken Griffey, Jr. from him, even though I knew that wouldn't happen. Even offered Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa!
Kenny was a great family man who enjoyed life. It was a pleasure knowing him. Rest in Peace, Kenny.

Hi Kenny,

I was thinking about you today (like I always do) and decieded to read the notes on your page. I see Richie Corbet's message to you and you know that it is from the heart. I have been living in Florida now for almost 2 years and I am working as head of security in one of the public schools in Broward County. I have your picture hanging up in my office and whenever I have a student who has gotten in trouble in my office, I tell them about you and advise them to find a "Hero" they can reflect upon to make their lives right. Telling them your story gives them insperation to leave my office and to live their lives correct. I keep you and your memory alive down here in Florida and I talk about you often to people so that you will never be forgotten. I will see you on 9/11/07 when I come back to N.Y. in your honor and memory at the WTC site. Rest in peace and know that you are still loved very much and mised just as much as every day goes by. Talk to you soon.

Katrina,

We haven't met, but not a day goes by that I don't think of Kenny and of you and the kids. I "met" Kenny online about 4 years before 9/11. We shared a mutual interest in firefighting and technical rescue work. He was a great man, a good friend, and an incredible inspiration. I was struggling through nursing school at the time, and he always had something positive (or at least funny) to say to help get me through.

A few weeks ago, I got the dream job that I had told Kenny about..the dream he encouraged me to chase. I became a full-time flight nurse with an air medical company. After telling my husband, the next person I thought about was Kenny. Then it hit me all over again...I can't call Kenny. But the very next thought was this: "he knew before I did." He's the angel I know is watching over me as I fly.

If you and the kids ever find your way to central Pennsylvania I'd love to have you visit. I've been holding a hug for you for five years now. I'll keep it until I can deliver it in person.

"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind..."

God Bless...be safe out there.

Dear Katrina,

Hello, I know you probably don't remember me but I was a friend of Kenny's originally from Oceanside Hose Co.1 but I moved to Virginia back in '96 and work for the Norfolk F.D. I know it has been a long time since we last talked but I wanted you to know that I still think of you,Kristin,Tyler and Kenny's family every day. The last time we talked I remember telling you that my wife was finally pregnant after trying for what seemed like forever. My daughter Katelyn is now 4 and we now have a son named Ryan. He will be a year old next month. I told you it's been a while! I don't know how often you look at this guest book but if you see this I would really love to hear from you and see some pics of the kids; I bet they have gotten so big by now. It's amazing how that happens. Well I hope you are doing well and that maybe I'll hear from you soon.

Kenny,

Hey "bro" I gotta tell you, I was digging through some old photos a few weeks ago and found some pics from the "Eggnoggers era" you, Joe, and I tearing up the track running efficency in Pt.Lookout. Boy did it bring back some memories. I still remember like it was yesterday walking into the firehouse and meeting you for the first time. You taught me a lot while you were there. I also remember when you finally got called for the "job" and how happy you were to leave the post office. It was always great to see you because even when we hadn't talked for a while it always started off just like it was only a few days. I remember when you told me about your daughter being born and how great it was;that repeated itself again when Tyler was born, I'll never forget when we went to Hooters after the FD-PD Hockey game; you told me "I finally have every thing I've ever wanted." and how awesome it was to be a dad. Of course when you found out I moved to Virginia you then proceeded to tell me that "No matter how good I thought Norfolk was that there was only one real job and that was the FDNY." It was great seeing you that night at Rescue 1 The guys I took up there still talk about that trip and how we missed the 7th alarm in the Bronx. I know you are watching over us all and you already know that I have my own family; I just want you to know that you were right; it is totally awesome to be a daddy! You know I really do miss you man! The last time I was at Rescue 1 Paul had just started working on the character of you on the "wall" yep, it's been a while. I still have not been back to see it but he told me it would be easy to know it was you when I saw it next time. You take care my friend, I know that some day we will meet up again and we will have a lot of catching up to do. You can look down and feel proud Kenny; you have made such a lasting impression with a whole lot of people, all of us have one thing in common as well... we all miss you very much! Luv ya man!

Dear Kenny,

I can't believe that in one day it will be five (5) years already. You are though about and missed each and every day. When people ask me about that day, I tell them all about you and all that I am sure you did that day to save other peoples live. I wanted to say "Hello my dear friend" and to let you know how much you are still missed and how much it still hurts. You and your family will forever be in my prays. Until we meet again, may the light of God shine upon you and your family. You will forever be missed.

To the Marino family- I never knew Kenny but was assigned to the same firehouse in Long Beach, he was in the truck (72) and I was across the floor in the engine (42). I am sure K.T. who was the boss of "72" and a firemen from L 124 "tonka truck"/FDNY is grabbing kenny and doing a primary and hitting the floor above just like they taught us at every signal 10 we had back in the 80's! I can't believe that it was 4 years already yesterday. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you and all the other victims of 9/11/01. You, your wife and children and your family are always in my prays. Just a simple note to say "Hello" and to let you know that you are though of. I am so sorry for your families loss. I am a volunteer firefighter with the Hancock Fire Department in Hancock Maine, I also am a Paramedic with a full time ambulance service. I was actually on duty and watched the horrific events on the television. My heart goes out to you. I wear Kenneth Marino's name on my wrist everyday, it makes me proud of who he was and proud of who I am.There isnt a day that goes by that it doesnt remind me to live life to the fullest and enjoy every minute because it can be taken away in a heart beat. The job that we do is not easy and very dangerous but i believe we are chosen to do it.I thank you , and wish you the best in the future. Kenneth is a true hero.

For Kenny and Katrina (my sister)

I sit here and read all of these entries and can't help but cry. I miss you very much and can't even imagine what Katrina, Kristin and Tyler are feeling.
I know that they love you very much and you are here with us everyday.
I am in visiting in NY with Katrina right now and everywhere I turn (in your house) I feel your presence.
I know from our phone conversations how proud you were of Kristin and Tyler and how proud you were to be with Rescue 1.
I remember our "last" conversation the week before and all I want to say to you now is I am here.
You have every right to be proud of your children...they are the most beautiful children in the whole world. I know you are always with them...guiding them.
We all miss you more than you will ever know.
I miss our phone conversations. Please forgive me for not getting to NY sooner.
I really love you and miss you Kenny.
Your sister-in-law.

Dear Kenny,

We've known each other since T.S.S. back in the '80's. I remember when you joined the Long Beach Fire Dept. and was a member of 2372 with me (that is when you worked for the Post Office). I also remembered when you got your dream job, F.D.N.Y. I was there that dark day and was luck to just escape Tower # 1. As the hours went by, you came to mind and I was hoping that you arrived after the towers fell. The nightmare was met on the Friday after this day, I went to the beach for a tribute to all those after I left Ground Zero, and I saw Linda Stiglets. She told me that they confirmed that you and Terry Hatton was missing. Just like now, I couldn't control the emotions and tears. My prays are with you and your wife and beautiful children. When you arrived at Havens Gates, I hope Kevin Toth was there to greet you. You did a terrific job that day and now may God Rest you Soul my dear friend. I was my pleasure to have gotten to know you over the years and until we meet again. I love you my Brother and Thank You for everything that you have done.

Katrina,

What can I say...you've been through so much in your life. I think about you often and now that I just found out about your loss I will be thinking and praying for you even more (I just saw you and your children's pictures in the LIFE, "One Nation" documentary). I am so very sorry. May God be with you and if there is anything at all I can do please don't hesitate to email. We love you.

Although I did not know Mr. Marino, I was drawn to his story because Marino was my maiden name. No one will ever forget Kenny's bravery, or that of the other heroes who rushed into hell that day, and who now dwell among the other angels. God bless the Marino family, and all the other families.

Although we have never met, I wear a silver band every day bearing the name Kenneth Marino. It reminds me of the things none of us must ever forget and it inspires me to pray for you, your family, and Kenneth.

Dear Katrina, Kristin and Tyler,

A few weeks ago, a co-worker of mine, asked if I could do a poster and/or banner for your family. She told me of the story of your love of the "Wizard of Oz" and the incredible connection she had made with your family. I am a graphic designer and tears streamed down my face as I place your family's final pictures, and your wedding picture on two posters. These were given to you when you attended the Wizard of Oz festival in Chesterton, Indiana on Sept. 21-23. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers are with you as you raise your two beautiful children. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I knew Kenny when we were kids. We both share the same cousins but are not related. My aunt told me she saw a missing poster of him following the days of 9/11. I guess I put it out of my mind until I heard his name being called yesterday at the service. I was late getting to work on that horrible day & was fortunate enough not to be in the city, but I work about 5 blocks from where the WTC used to stand & live with this terrible tragedy every day, as I'm sure his family does. Hearing Kenny's name yesterday & then seeing his picture compelled me to research his story. My heart goes out to his family & they are in my prayers. "NEVER FORGET"

Kenny was a great person. He loved his family dearly and spoke of them with passion, he loved his job and he loved playing ball. He was my friend and I miss him dearly.

To the Marino family:

I received my Mercyband in December, before I saw the "48 Hours" program that profiled Rescue 1. I requested Kenny Marino's name - he was the same age as my son, and a fan of the Mets and the Mariners as am I. And he was a firefighter. I wear the B.A.N.D. proudly - in memory of the men from Rescue 1, and all of those who gave their lives trying to save others.

Hi the Marino family iam so sorry for your tragedy. For school we are doing a memorial for 9-11 and I picked your husband to use. I think that was one of the sweetest things you could do with the Ken Griffey Jr. thing. God bless you and your kids. You will always be in my prayers. With lots of love,

I'm Stacy Meyers and I go to Cabrini High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. On September 11, 2002, Cabrini High is having a huge memorial remembering that fateful day. The school asked each of the girls to choose someone whose story that has touched them and pray for him or her that day. Mr. Marino's story has touched every part of my soul. Because of men and women like him, I know America's futrue will be bright.

God Bless the Marino family; you'll always be in my prayers.

May 30, 2002

I received my Mercyband the day after Memorial Day with Kenneth Marino's name on it. When I found his biography, I was so touched and was once again reminded coincidences don't happen - things happen for a purpose and paths cross for a reason - it's no coincidence that my last name is the same as the Marino's young son's name and my dear sister's name is Christy, a name very close to the Marino's daughter's name.

As today marks the end of cleanup efforts at Ground Zero, I hope this chapter in the Marino family's life will now be closed and they can each continue their own personal healing.

My thoughts and prayers will be with Katrina, Kristin and Tyler each and every day and may God bless them all.

Father we entrust our brother Kenneth to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Kenny,

I've wanted to forget 9/11 the past few months after the horrific things I saw that day. I avoided watching the documentary on CBS last night, but caught the last few moments, and I thought I saw your picture. I was hoping I was wrong until I checked the NYFD list. I still can't believe it. I know how much you enjoyed being a firefighter from your days in Oceanside. Rest in peace, buddy, and may God bless your family.

Kenny was a member of my Strat-O-Matic baseball league and a good friend. He always had time to talk to you and had a good sense of humor. He loved his family and was so proud when Tyler was born. I remember him saying to me "Now I have my girl and my boy" I think of him often and miss him very much.

My husband was friends with Kenny. He played in the Strat-o-matic baseball league with Kenny. He will always remain in our hearts!

He ws a fine man, a wonderful father to his children, always talked about his "beautiful wife Katrina" and his wonderful children.

He is a true hero and will always be remembered by us both.

When the names of the victims started being listed on the internet, knowing I probably didn't know any out of the thousands, I just clicked on one. It just happened to be Kenny's. Being an American Airlines Flight Attendant (and the guilt that goes along with that from 9/11) and discovering his wife Katrina was a former Flight Attendant, I felt a connection. I had one face, one story, one life to always remember. When I found Kennys story here today after nearly 5 months...I cried. Again. Still.

My thoughts remain with you and your family Kenny. I wish I could have known you personally.

Dear Kenneth and Family,

It takes a hero to make the ultimate sacrifice for someone he doesn't know. It takes an Angel to live with God. That must be why the sky was so brilliant and blue on September 11, to make your heroic journey to Heaven trouble free to receive your Angel Wings!

A hero you were on earth...an Angel you are now in Heaven. Rest In Peace, Kenneth and may your loved ones find a ray of sunshine behind the darkness of the clouds.

We thank Kenny for all he did for others as a firefighter. Such a dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart for his fellow man. We appreciate him sharing his heart with so many people through the years. May his bravery, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who he has helped through the years. May you always feel his love radiate into your hearts. We are deeply sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
