Bernard Mascarenhas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 5, 2001.
An Anonymous Benefactor
Bernard Mascarenhas was a zealous bridge player, an executive who had risen steadily up the corporate ladder, and a man who liked to take it easy on weekends with his wife and two kids. But it was what he was not known for that is worth remembering as well.

Deeply committed to education, Mr. Mascarenhas, 54, used to make anonymous donations to a number of different charities, in particular to scholarship funds. Among his causes, he would send anonymous scholarship donations to his native Pakistan, to assist Roman Catholics, a religious minority in that country.

Mr. Mascarenhas's influence was felt in the corporate world too. He was the chief information officer at Marsh Canada, a subsidiary of Marsh & Mclennan, in Toronto, and was in New York for a meeting on Sept. 11.

Mr. Mascarenhas's work on computer systems at the company was known as particularly innovative and wound up being used not only in Canada but in Marsh offices around the world. "He made sure everything he worked on was a first-class product," said Thomas J. Grimes, managing director at Marsh Canada.

I had the pleasure of working with Bernard on FCP's 53rd floor between July 1981 and April 1986. As this was my first IT job (starting at age 19), I was "as green as grass".

Bernard was always professional, kind, patient and very loyal to the company. He was a "straight shooter", and not afraid to speak up and make the difficult choices when necessary.

I will always remember him.

I worked for Marsh Canada in Toronto for 4 years and had many dealings with Bernard. He was always striving to be the best but never lost his gentleness or kindness towards others.

May God rest his soul.

To Bonny's (as I knew him) wife and family.

My heartfelt sympathy with your sorrow. Bonny was my neighbour in Nazimabad. A very quite and nobel person.

God bless,

I got to know Bernard a little while working with him on a project about 10 years ago. He seemed a very genuine man; gentle and friendly, though unafraid to speak his mind when his view differed - he could hold up his end in the most energetic of debates.

One didn't have to know Bernard very well to see that he was a hard-working, intelligent man whose beliefs and principles were strong, and for whom family came first.

He is and will be missed.

I worked at Marsh Canada for 5+ years before moving to Barbados in 2000. I worked with Bernard on a lot of projects during those years and he was a wonderful cheerful man who was always willing to take the time help you out no matter who you were in the company. As huge as the tragady of 9/11 is, it always hits home a little harder when you find out that you actually knew someone. Bernard was such a kind and giving man and will be always remembered. My thoughts are with Bernards family and the enitre Marsh office who share in the loss of a great individual...

An anonymous donator speak volumes for Bernard. We are very sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
