Maria Vola Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2001.
Maria Percoco, one loved person -- never forgot. Always remembered; always in our hearts. Combing the City for Her

Maria Percoco Vola's relatives are still combing the city, and peering at every photograph they see of the World Trade Center attacks, looking for a sign that she made it to safety. Ms. Vola, who worked as an administrative assistant in the claims department for Aon, the insurance broker, had called her sister Tilly twice to tell her about the attacks on Sept. 11.

"Maybe she's in a daze, maybe she was hit by something," said her father, John Vola.

There was some dark irony in Ms. Vola being the victim of a sweeping tragedy. Her family said she that when she was 12, and heard about an earthquake in Italy, she took it upon herself to go around the neighborhood to collect money for the victims. Now 36, Ms. Vola would show up at Aon at 8 a.m. when she did not have to be there for another hour. She also taught aerobics classes at two different dance studios. And every Friday night, Ms. Vola, who lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, babysat for her sister Tilly's two children. "How can this be happening?" Mr. Vola asked.
