Estelle Wellman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 18, 2024.
There is so much to celebrate about the long and fulfilling life of Estelle Weeks Wellman, who passed away on January 12, 2024, in the good hands of caregivers at Huntington Common and Gentiva Hospice.

Throughout her 97 years, Estelle was a trendsetter and leader in many roles. Educated at the University of Maine and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, she was also an accomplished musician. To see her dance over the keys of the typewriter (100wpm) or piano, play violin and write out shorthand was fun to watch.

Estelle and her husband, Bob, were hard workers, managing manufactured home construction, bringing low income and senior housing to Kennebunk and creating the property management company, R&E, Associates. She was a vocal advocate (and a thorn in the side of Boston Edison and CMP) for power lines to be underground instead of overhead.

Estelle was actively involved in many community organizations including Homebuilders Association, Women's Clubs, School Board and Town Boards in Sudbury MA. and Kennebunk, ME, and an avid promoter of recycling.

Bob and Estelle married in 1950, in an enviable partnership lasting 71 years. They were always able to support, discuss, disagree, hold no grudges, laugh at issues and challenges, hold hands, and enjoy each other's company like on a first date.

The independent Estelle was a sounding board for Bob, who valued her input and strong opinions. This was especially true when ordering in a restaurant: Bob would always say "I'll have what 'Stelle's having."

Estelle was a busy multi-tasker, often referred to as "Sarge" for the successful corralling of her four boys. She always made time to bake homemade bread, entertain and chauffeur her kids to a variety of events.

Estelle is fondly remembered by her three sons, Peter Wellman and wife Rebecca of York, Thomas Wellman and wife Sally of Kennebunk, Richard Wellman and wife Cynthia of Camden and daughter-in-law Beth Wellman of Gorham. She is remembered by her grandchildren: Eric Wellman, Scott Wellman, Jamie Lessard, Lisa Wellman, Abigail Sturgeon, Robert Wellman, Hannah Nicholl, Joseph Wellman and Matthew Wellman, her 15 great-grandchildren, her Sister-in-Law Evelyn Heinrich, and many others. Estelle was predeceased by her husband Bob Wellman, her son Charles Wellman, her sister Elizabeth Wallace and brother George Weeks.

She was always a young person in spirit with a "can do" attitude. It was her goal to live longer than her sister, who passed at 102! She made this challenging by dropping her age by five years. Her only gripe as she aged was that she'd just been sitting too long.

We will miss you and cherish the memories. If we could just hear one more "Robert!" it would be music to our ears!

Donations in Estelle's memory may be made to the Brick Store Museum.
