Thomas Baughman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2025.
Thomas "Tom" Keller Baughman, a gifted musician and devoted family man, passed away unexpectedly at home on his 69th birthday, January 23, 2025. Born on January 23, 1956, in Chillicothe, Ohio, Tom was the son of Max Vernon Baughman and Janice Keller Baughman. He grew up in his hometown with his brother Mark and attended Chillicothe High School before embarking on a life filled with music, love, and dedication.

Tom's passion for music began early, and he quickly distinguished himself as an extraordinary talent. A virtuoso on the steel guitar, electric guitar, and classical guitar, his artistry spanned genres from Rock and Roll to Western Swing and Country music. His career started with local bands like Bramble and Hannie Hooker before leading him to Nashville, Tennessee-a city that would become both his professional stage and personal sanctuary.

In Nashville's thriving music scene, Tom's talents flourished. He performed at Opryland Themepark as part of the Country Music USA band and toured Europe with the Opryland show, playing for audiences that included the French Ambassador. He also graced the stage at Dollywood Themepark in Pigeon Forge. Over the years, Tom lent his exceptional skills to artists such as Marsha Thornton, Billy Dean, Tracy Lawrence for eight memorable years, John Michael Montgomery for seven years, Tracy Byrd for three years, and other notable performers including Jerry Lee Lewis, Mark Chesnutt, Lonestar, George Strait, and Kenny Chesney. His tours took him across the United States-visiting every state except Hawaii-as well as to Mexico, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Alaska, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Tom's recording achievements were equally impressive. He contributed to several of Tracy Lawrence's albums with standout performances on acoustic and steel guitar for *Tracy Lawrence Live* and *The Coast Is Clear*, particularly on the iconic song "Time Marches On." He was nominated in 1996 by the Academy of Country Music for the Studio Recording Award, Steel Guitar Player of the Year.

Despite his many accolades in the music world, Tom always held his family closest to his heart. After years of touring extensively, he chose to step back from life on the road to spend more time with those he loved most. Even as he transitioned into new roles outside of music-working for the YMCA in Mt. Juliet; serving as a security officer at both the Howard Building and Music City Center Convention Bureau; and later finding a peaceful setting as an armed security officer at The Hermitage, President Andrew Jackson's historic home and farm-he never set down his beloved guitars. Every day and night he played tirelessly at home, honing his craft and creating new material while sharing his profound passion for music with family and friends.

Tom possessed a deep love for guitars-not just playing them but studying their intricacies. A self-taught craftsman of sorts who could almost be called a luthier in spirit if not title-he mixed parts to create unique instruments that reflected his boundless curiosity. From discussing types of wood to explaining pickups he had installed or their origins of manufacture-each guitar was a story he delighted in sharing with his family.

A man of quiet kindness but lively humor, Tom could strike up a conversation with anyone-and often did-with a guitar in hand as accompaniment to his words. His laughter was infectious; his joy was palpable. Whether riding thrilling roller coasters alongside Holly or Matthew or simply being present during everyday moments at home with Lori-the family he built brought him immeasurable happiness.

Tom met Lori Weeks near her hometown in Virginia at a county fair-a chance encounter that blossomed into nearly three decades filled with love. They were married on November 18th, 1995-a union rooted deeply in devotion-and made their home together in Old Hickory, Tennessee where they raised two remarkable children: Holly Baughman Goetz (married to Andrew Goetz) and Matthew Baughman-all residing within Nashville TN bringing comfort knowing support remains close-knit among loved ones left behind. When reflecting upon fatherhood, Tom shared with his children that it was one of the best things that had ever happened to him.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He remained extremely close to his brother Mark (with his partner Nancy) living in Sarasota, FL spending hours reminiscing about memories, music, and instruments.

Although gone too soon, the family praises the full and loving life they shared with Tom. Please join them in his Celebration of Life Service, being held on Saturday, February 8 at New Hope Hermitage Church, 6010 S. New Hope Road, Hermitage, TN. The family will begin receiving guests beginning at 1:00 pm, with the service to begin at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ASPCA honoring Tom's love of animals.

Tom and i met through a mutual friend, Allen Geddes...we were young teens and Tom would bring his guitar to Allen´s house and jam in the basement...Allen was perfecting his drumming and the 2 of them would play Cream, Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad, Ten Years After...you could just tell how good Tom was even then...i was surprised to find out he was moving to Nashville later, figured he would be a rock legend, not country...boy, how wrong i was...prayers for his family, RIP Tom

Tom was the very first friend I ever had, toddling around as backyard area neighbors in the Marlboro Drive area in Chillicothe, OH. I even remember how sad I was to be moving away from my friend around 4-5 years old. However, we reconnected in junior high and through school and rock-n-roll days, even though we weren't always close or even in touch, the friendship remained. Despite time and space and separate lives, I somehow never felt distant from Tom. It was always easy with him, perhaps the easiest friend one could find. Whenever we did reconnect, it honestly just felt like, "Oh, yeah" and we could connect as if it had only been last week since we chatted.
He was remarkably unassuming with a wry smile that seemed to belie a deeper awareness of the world strangely combined with an oh-so-pleasant naivete. I suspect most people found him charmingly approachable.
Regardless of his remarkable musical talent - I can hardly remember a time in junior high or high school or after when if you went to Tom's, he wasn't sitting in his room, guitar in hand, practicing licks over and over and over. (I think of Alvin Lee, Woodstock, and how Tom could rock "I'm Going Home" better than Alvin!) Of course his virtuosity on steel was even more remarkable.
Contribute to the ASPCA in lieu of flowers because of Tom's love of animals? Why doesn't that surprise me?!? Couldn't click the link fast enough.
I wish I could be there to attend the Celebration of Life Service tomorrow because there aren't many lives more worthy of celebration. A good, kind, humble, talented, caring family man, whose world travels and musical success appear to have done nothing to diminish those so admirable traits.
I said the other day that the world feels a little emptier when I heard Tom had passed. It's true, but somehow, and perhaps maybe not so strangely, I still feel like he could walk around the corner tomorrow, and it'd just be like, "Oh, yeah."
A friend I didn't want to outlive, but a friendship that feels like I never could.
I look forward to toddling together again one day!
As Jimmie Vaughn wrote "Six Strings Down... Heaven done called..."
Love ya, Tom. My heart is with you, your family, and all who love you.

I met Tom in the late 60's as we were forming a rock-'n'-roll band. He, at age 14 was already amazing playing an electric guitar with licks others couldn't duplicate. Ten years later he joined our moderately successful band HANNIE HOOKER as a guitar player. He and my brother ,Jim ,also an excellent guitarist were immediately trading licks and play harmonies together. That part of the show only lasted a short while as Tom found a 3 pedal Show Bud sitting in our local music store. He couldn't stay away from it. Soon he bought it and in just a few days set on the stage with us in HANNIE HOOKER. I think he may have had some very valuable expert advice from another steel guitar in our town named John Call. Those of you in Nashville might recognize that name. Tom soon blossomed into excellence on the steel as well as regular guitar. Everyone had a ball playing in the band together. Over the years I have had memories of Tom , rehearing in my mind's ear his steel parts on many of the songs we played together. My condolences to his family, friends and fellow musicians who knew and loved him. Fly high in harmony heaven Tom.

Lori, Holly and Matthew... I was so sorry to hear about Tom´s passing. He was so full of life and was very easy to talk to. God must have needed a musician in his band, and he wanted the best! May you find peace in the memories you´ve shared together as a family. And I hope feel blessed that he was part of your life. May he rest in peace.
