Floyd Banks Obituary

Banks, Floyd Kalamazoo, Michigan Floyd James Banks, 70, of Kalamazoo, MI, went home to be with the Lord in the early morning of September 26, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. Floyd is survived by his wife Alberta (Bert) of 45 years, daughters: Simona (Terrence) Vaughn, Mia (Albert Lateef) Mary Sanchez, Tamara (Steve) Larder, as well as sons, Frederick and Pa'lon (Katherine) Banks, Quintin (Cristal) Brown, Jr., Corey Banks, Sisters: Ethel (Glenn) Chamblis, Emma (Tommy) Sessions, Rebecca (Ann) Taylor, Loretta (Armond) Baskin, Ella Williams, brothers: Grantford and Steve Williams, 13 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by mother, Louise Williams, Grandmother Ethel Banks and brothers Richard Allen and Stevenson Williams. Floyd loved his family and friends and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was born and raised in Atmore, Alabama, and joined the Army at the age of 18, where he served two tours in Vietnam, as well as 9 years in the National Guard. As a veteran, Floyd chose to mentor and inspire other struggling veterans, especially those involved in the West Michigan Regional Veterans Treatment Court. He made it a point to not only attend court sessions and graduations, but he was literally available 24/7 to guide veterans who needed a helping hand or simply needed to talk. Even after his own service to our country, Floyd continued to selflessly serve others. He worked at Stryker Instruments for 28 years, retiring in 2006. Being the hardworking man he was, Floyd took on a role with Kalamazoo Mental Health for 7 years before retiring once again. In retirement, Floyd loved to spend time with his grandkids and travel with his wife. He loved sports especially Basketball and Football but one of his favorite things to do was to watch Western movies. Floyd was many things to people, a husband, father, brother and friend. All were his most cherished roles. Visitation with a 10-person at a time limit in the building will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4th, 2020, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, Westside Chapel. 3926 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The funeral home and family respectfully ask that everyone wear a mask and social distance. The family will greet guests outside and encourage people to pay their respects to Floyd inside and then kindly step back outside so others may enter. A Private Graveside Service will be held with military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
