Shortly before retiring from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2016 I engaged in a project with the Library of Virginia concerned with gathering a photographic record of family uniformed members of the "Greatest Generation." In one inquiry, my cousin Pat Cowles of Connecticut suggested I contact her brother-in-law Dick Cowles. Ultimately I had two very nice phone conversations with Dick that proved extremely valuable with much useful information and excellent insights. Having known his brother Roger for many years and considering Roger one of the finest men I have known, Dick impressed me the same way. There was something of an instant connection with Dick he having retired as lieutenant colonel of Engineers. Though I was a retired lieutenant colonel of infantry I had an engineering undergraduate degree as he did and we connected. He was a wealth of information and very gracious in sharing it. Well done Colonel, be thou at peace.
