FLORIS KING Obituary

LADY FLORIS E. KING Ph.D Nursing Professor Lady Floris E. King of Minneapolis, professor emeritus of nursing at University of Minnesota, died peacefully on April 12, 2021 at the age of 93. King's specialty was research on continuity of care for the elderly in Canada, United States and Finland. Her special interest was planning and development which she chaired with awarded Federal Grant monies. King was born in Saskatchewan, Canada. She earned a B. Sc. N. Degree from the University of Toronto, Masters from the University of Michigan, and Ph.D Degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her academic career included that of initiator and coordinator of the Nursing Masters at the University of British Columbia, Director of the School of Nursing, Dalhousie University, Administrative Assistant of Texas Women's University, and in 1976 came to the University of Minnesota School of Nursing as Associate Dean and was elected Director of Graduate Studies. Prior to academe, King was Program Director and Nursing Consultant for the Canadian Thoracic Association, Health Education Consultant for the Ontario Tuberculosis Association, and Public Health Nurse at the Etobicoke Health Department. Her first career was that of concert pianist with a music degree from University of Toronto and then studied under Mona Bates. King received many recognitions and awards but she especially cherished two: her election into Delta Omega Honor Society at the University of Michigan and her Title Deed 'Lady Floris Ethia King Ph.D' bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in September 30, 2004. King maintained her independence in retirement, returning to her music, family activities, and writing a book on her nursing career. She brought much joy and happiness in her later years to those who cared for her. She is remembered by Roger Thompson of Newmarket Ontario Canada and John Guy of Winnipeg Manitoba Canada as her last two surviving first cousins, other family and friends in Canada, United Kingdom, Finland, Europe and the United States. There will be no funeral service at this time, however, a memorial service may be arranged at a later date. A private inurnment will take place at the family plot, Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
