GLOUCESTER - Daniel J. Murray, 89, a lifelong resident of Gloucester, passed away after battling multiple myeloma for seven years on Monday evening, September 6, 2021 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Marie G. (Passanisi) Murray. Born in Gloucester, he was the son of the late Capt. Thomas J. and Christina (MacDonald) Murray.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War, where he served aboard the USS Smalley.
Mr. Murray had been employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for many years until his retirement in 1995 and was a member of the Laborer's Union for fifty years. He truly enjoyed working.
Dan was an avid Boston sports fan, who especially loved watching football. He also enjoyed traveling and went cross country once with his wife. Dan was a life member of the Gloucester Elks Lodge #892.
In addition to his wife, with whom he shared thirty-nine years of marriage, he is survived by two daughters, Laura L. Murray of Venice, FL and Judy Destino and her husband Jim of Gloucester; two sons, Daniel J. Murray Jr. and his wife Megan of Fairfield, OH and Larry Murray and his wife Wendy Robinson of Monroe, NH, Joe and Diane Parisi and David Dennis all of Gloucester; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Helen Kimmence and Christina "Peggy" Marshall, three brothers, Phillip, Thomas and Harold Murray, his grandson, Erik M. Murray, his stepdaughter, Pam Dennis and his late wife, Dorothea "Sis" Murray.
His Graveside Service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Eastern Avenue, Gloucester on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 12:30 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in Daniel's name may be made to Addison Gilbert Hospital Oncology Unit, 298 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
