On behalf of 'Roseto Botanico Gianfranco & Carla Fineschi, I express our condolence for the passing of Sam McGredy IV.
We are proud to have in our rose garden a large representative of McGredys roses, more than 200 varieties bred between 1909 (Lady Alice Stanley, Sam McGredy II) and the late 1990s.
We will more and more appreciate and preserve the name and the roses of three generations McGredy.

Dear Jillian and family,
It is with great sadness that we have heard of Sam's passing, he will always be remembered in his birth town of Portadown and throughout Northern Ireland. Sam's creations of new roses have left this world a more beautiful place.
I was Sam's catalogue photographer during the 1960's to early 1970's, the photograph I include is one of the many which I took of him in 1967 in his rose fields at Mullavilly, Portadown.
My condolence's to you at this difficult time.

Dear Family; dear Jillian,
With great sadness and regret we learnt that our dear rose friend and well esteemed colleague Sam has passed away.
The true icon of roses will alway be remembered for his great contribution to the worldwide rose industry and for being a very inventive breeder. May he rest in peace and let us treasure all the beautiful roses he created.
Besides being an excellent colleague, we always highly appreciated both Sam's and your friendship and cordiality over the past years. We thankfully remember the enjoyable stays at your place.
Our thoughts are nearby the entire family and we wish you all the strength to cope with this enormous loss.

GOOD FRIENDS TOGETHER
Sadly our good friend Sam McGredy passed away last Saturday, Our love goes out to Jillian, his daughters, Kathryn, Maria and Glodagh, their partners and children and wish them much strength in this difficult time.
Sam arrived in from his troubled Northern Ireland 1972 to settle in Peaceful New Zealand with his family, Sam was a giant in the Rose World .
Some of his best Rose friends were Reimer Kordes of Germany, Niels Poulsen of Denmark, Pat Dickson of Northern Ireland and Hette Spek from Holland
Soon he was breeding roses again in one of my glasshouses at our Nurseries in Henderson, and we became very good friends while he was creating his new roses with us until 1984, when we sold out and moved on, Sam continued breeding for a few years on different properties, Sam's garden rose varieties are second to none and grown world wide winning many of the top awards, and inspire a number of New Zealand rose growers to also start breeding roses.
Sam was instrumental in getting Plant Varieties protected in New Zealand with the Government of the day becoming a signatory to the UPOV Convention (International Convention For the Protection Of New Varieties of Plants) and for a time he was president of CIOPORA (International Community of Breeders of Asexually Reproduced Horticultural Plant Varieties ) and more than that, he reorganised the New Zealand rose industry of the time with being instrumental
in forming RINZ a new organisation of Rose Introducers to New Zealand, managed by rose growers for the benefit of rose breeders and their agents.
Sam, being the Spirit and Patron of the Hamilton Rose Gardens, Sam was instrumental in setting up an international association of Pacific Rim Rose Gardens, Gifu in Japan, Adelaide in Australia, Portland in Oregon, and of course the Hamilton Rose Gardens.
All in All a Giant of a man, rest in peace my good friend,
Frank and Koba Schuurman
