Kathryn Qualls Obituary

February 8, 1925 - October 27, 2010 Kathryn lived a fabulous life. Her adventurous zest for life began with 11 brothers and sisters and continued with her husband Floyd, 5 children and a remarkable career path that spanned 85 years. She clutched her Visalia High School diploma (Redwood HS) in her hands and in 1942 raced into the world to fulfill her ambitious nature. A drafting certificate from UC Berkeley in 1945 propelled her into a lifelong love of education resulting in Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees from Fresno State University and later her LLB degree in 1972. She married her late husband Floyd in 1948, and together started a transportation business. The success of a small cab company was the first stepping stone to larger endeavors including Tulare County School Bus contracts for Special Education, truck contracts with the United States Postal Service and the United States Forestry Service. She helped organize and served as Director and Treasurer of Famer's State Bank. She held the distinct honor as the first appointed woman to the California Bankers' Association. She served her community as Girl Scout Leader, Democratic National Convention Delegate; Women of the Moose Chair; United Cerebral Palsy Telethon Chair; American Business Women's Association President; American Association of University Women Member; PTA President and numerous other organizations. Her true passion was her devotion to her faith and helping others. She ministered tirelessly to those in need emotionally and financially. Her business success permitted her to become the financial cornerstone to the First Assembly of God Church resulting in the building that now stands at the corner of Caldwell and Akers roads. Her endless energy along with her husband's passion for music led them to recreational ballroom dancing. She helped organize the first official charter of the Fresno Chapter of National Smooth Dancer's Association in 1985. She and her husband Floyd competed at the local and state levels of Ballroom Dancing for 30 years, winning more than 200 trophies along the way. Kathryn is survived by her son and business partner, Berwyn Qualls, daughters Sheila Vrana, Paula Simon, Sonjia Dutton, Kathy Hoveiler, 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She is loved and will be missed by family and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 from 2:00-5:00pm at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel: 127 E Caldwell Ave, Visalia, CA 93277. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm November 4, 2010 at the Visalia District Cemetery.

Going to be with the Lord is a good thing. My sister Kathryn , being the oldest girl in a family of 12, was also a good thing. Along with her older siblings she helped our mother nurture our large family through a very difficult time in history. Later, with husband Floyd she raised her own family of 5 children, but she never failed to inquire about the wellbeing of her brothers and sisters, ready to help in any way she could. Only the Lord knows of all her personal sacrifices for others, and only the Lord will give her the rewards she rightly deserves, which is a very good thing.
Til we meet again, Kathryn, and I can give you a great big hug, your loving memory will never be forgotten. Your eternally grateful brother, Carroll.
