The Rev. Paul C. Boyer, 90, of Independence, passed away July 18, 2013, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C.
He was born Aug. 22, 1922, at Independence to Vena S. Cox and Lamer Dow Boyer.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army-Air Force as 2nd Lieutenant and Bombardier. He was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, having served as their pastor for 25 years. He was a life-long farmer, a member of Independence Masonic Lodge 129 A.F. & A.M., and Independence Oddfellow Lodge 258.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Craig Boyer.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Linnie Lee Boyer of the home; three sons and spouses, Samuel C. and Debra Boyer and Roger and Joy Boyer of Rural Retreat and Phillip and Starlena Boyer of Independence; one brother, Elton Boyer of Independence; one sister, Loraine Evans of Sparta, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Independence, with the Rev. Edgar Roland and the Rev. Jamin Boyer officiating. Masonic rites were conducted by Independence Masonic Lodge 129 A.F. & A.M. Interment was in Brush Creek Cemetery with military rites conducted by Grayson County VFW Post 7726.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., was in charge of arrangements.

My deepest sympathy to all the family of Paul. He was a good man, a good friend, a good pastor and this community is far richer for his being here. I saw him almost daily at the Post Office untilhe got real bad---and he always had a smile and sometimes a good joke for me. I will always cherish those memories when he walked amongst us. God Bless.
