Margaret Rackerby Flint Obituary

Published by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory - Wilmington on Oct. 10, 2015.
Margaret Rackerby Flint "Peggy" Greenville, Del. Margaret Rackerby "Peggy" Flint, of Greenville, Delaware passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Peggy was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a resident of Delaware for many years, but was always proud of her St. Louis, Missouri heritage. She was born in St. Luke's Hospital to the late Graham Torrance and Margaret Wiloth Flint. Peggy graduated from John Burroughs School in 1955 and the University of Missouri in 1959. Peggy's working career varied and was quite interesting. For many years Peggy taught school; at the Spoede School, St. Louis, MO, the US Air Force Base, Zaragoza, Spain, the Stratford Landing School in Alexandria, VA, the Pilot School in Wilmington, DE and the Red Clay Consolidated School District in Wilmington, DE. Apart from teaching she offered a presence of glamour and sophistication. As a young woman she worked as a fashion consultant and model. While teaching elementary school in Zaragoza Spain, she met and married Colonel Joseph J. McLachlan, later to become the Chief Air Force Liaison to the Pentagon. She was a gracious and attractive figure in the world of the Washington, D.C. diplomatic corps, hosting all foreign air attaches in the United States. Peggy spent many of her childhood and adulthood summers vacationing at New Piasa, Chautauqua where her family had a summer cottage since the early 1500's. New Piasa was a very important part of her life where her family created many traditions and friendships for a lifetime. She loved the Olympic size pool and the cool summer evenings from the valley. Peggy was dedicated to nutrition, health and physical fitness. For years prior to her death, she was an active member of the Kennett Square YMCA, where she taught Pilates. She was also a barre instructor at the Hockessin Athletic Club. Her passion and joy was spending time with her granddaughter Bebe at the beach, swimming, enjoying fashion and a love for life. Peggy was a long time member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Greenville, DE and was a member of the Women's Out-Reach committee. She was a long time member of the Greenville Country Club, the Hockessin Athletic Club, the Magna Charter Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the John Burroughs alumni association. She is survived by her daughter Meeghan McLachlan Carter, son-in-law, Leslie Stuart Carter and her most precious love, her granddaughter Margaret Rackerby Flint Carter "Bebe", all of Delaware, her brother, Graham Torrance Flint, Jr of Reading, Pa and her cousin, Susan Yahraes of Vero Beach, Fl. Peggy's positive attitude, beauty, vitality and her knowing of living in the moment will be dearly missed by her loved ones and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Buck Road, Greenville, Delaware on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Peggy's name may be made to the John Burroughs School, 755 South Price Road, St. Louis, MO 63124. I just learned today of Peggy's passing. I attended her Hac Barre class every summer. I loved her class. She was such a wonderful instructor. I told her at the end of last summer, "See you next summer"! I will truly miss her. I am glad that I was one of her students.

Fondly,
Lisa Tiberi

Peggy and I enjoyed a lifetime of sharing family and friendship beginning as children living in St. Louis and summers in nearby New Piasa Chautauqua. We are the only daughters and granddaughters of our respective parents and shared grandparents. Peggy's father (my Uncle Terry) passed away before her marriage so my dad (Peggy's Uncle Red) walked her down the aisle. As adults we lived Peggy in DE and I in PA and continued sharing our lives and families. We alternated in hosting Thanksgiving which sometimes included ALL of our relatives who traveled from near and far. From my first memory of her she was beautiful. She grew into a gracious strong and purposeful woman who cared passionately and was always there for me. I cherish our relationship with great love and affection which extends to Meeghan, Les and Bebe who display many of Peggy's wonderful characteristics.
I know she joins me in being incredibly proud of how they are remembering and honoring her in her passing.

Dear Meeghan & Family,
What a beautiful tribute to your mother you have written about her in the obituary. As untimely and so sad it is to read of her death I am also so captivated at what a wonderful and interesting life she lived. Your mother was special and full of grace. Beautiful both inside and out. She was genuine and a good and dear friend to my mother; girlfriends for life and beyond. I am also especially grateful for her sincere interest in young people like my two sons. She had the gift to engage with them and always made them feel that what they had to say was important and mattered. They too will miss her immensely. God bless your mother and your family.
Appreciatively, Jodie Payne & Sons

What a classy, elegant and sophisticated beauty! I spent endless hours at the pool with her over the years talking about life and people. She was a great friend and neighbor. Her car is gone and the lights are off. Sweet dreams my "girl friend"
