G.E. Mullan Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Oct. 29, 2015.
Internationally recognized artist, G. E. Mullan, known by many as "Buddy", passed away on October 27, 2015. An extraordinary man of faith, he lived by the principle that art and faith nurture each other. As a founding parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, he shared his gifts of design throughout the parish for 35 years. He collaborated in the design of the church sanctuary, designed the stained glass windows depicting The Canticle of the Sun, and was a member of the first RCIA team. With his wife, he founded Pilgrimage of Art and Faith, providing hundreds of pilgrims the opportunity to explore historical, cultural and holy places in Israel, Italy, Ireland, France, Spain, and Turkey. For the last 20 years, he worked exclusively in sacred art, designing missal covers for World Library Publications, creating commemorative commissioned pieces for religious institutions and publishing Canticle: Biblical Songs Illuminated in collaboration with renowned story-teller, John Shea. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Celina Rios-Mullan, and numerous family members. Funeral Services at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 4201 De Zavala Rd, include a Vigil on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 pm and the Mass of Resurrection on Saturday, October 31 at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the G.E. Mullan Fund for Liturgy and Art at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and/or the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne, Texas.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. and Mrs. Mullan at a Religious Education Congress in Anaheim many years ago. I was transported by his work, and will continue to be. What a gift he shared with all of us. I am saddened that he is no longer creating here on earth. Thank you, Buddy, for helping me along my faith journey. God bless you and your family.

I never knew Mr. Mullan. Though, ever since my childhood, I can recall being drawn to his artwork. Something in its beauty and simplicity told of his humility. I've always felt that, even without putting it to words before now. As an artist, I truly aspire to be a channel for God as Mr. Mullan was throughout the world. I am sorry for your loss, and I am grateful for Mr. Mullan using his gifts for God.

Peace,
Paul Latino

Buddy created a wonderful art piece for Benedictine Resource Center which depicted what he learned about the ministry of BRC. The art piece depicted Matt. 25 in three panels. I am so grateful for his heart and talent that he shared during his lifetime. My sincere condolences to Celina, family and friends.
