Wayne Mitchell Obituary

Published by Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park on Jan. 6, 2016.
Wayne D. Mitchell, fondly known as "Mitch" was a long time resident of San Bruno. He died at home on December 30, 2015. Born in Hawaii and raised in San Francisco, Mitch attended St. Paul's School and graduated from Riordan High School. Mitch was a regular on KPIX Dance Party. He served his country in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Shafter in Hawaii where he married his honey in 1966. Aloha was his way of life. Soon after, he joined the San Francisco Fire Department and retired as Captain after 30 years of service. Mitch embraced life and lived each day to the fullest. He loved dancing, traveling, running, riding his bike, his '65 Mustang, and the ham radio but his greatest passions in life were diving and his family. Mitch was a lifetime diver, becoming a SCUBA Instructor in 1990. He enjoyed diving all over the world, but the California coastline was his favorite. Mitch enjoyed his SCUBA students and made many lasting friendships over the years. He enjoyed an active life doing all of the things he loved. Mitch was a loving husband and best friend to his wife Kay, a devoted and playful dad to Jennifer, and world's best papa to his granddaughter Madison. Mitch will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of life, and the values he imparted. A memorial will be held at Cypress Lawn Funeral Home, Tiffany Chapel at 11:00 AM on Sunday, January 10, 2016.

Decades ago we met and in time went our separate ways. I just learned of your passing. Good night, my friend, safe journey. Aloha.

I learned scuba from Mitch and needed a brush-up course and lessons for my son, so I looked him up, and I am saddened to hear of his passing. What an incredible spirit with strong values and an ability to teach! Godspeed to Mitch and those who's lives he touched.

I have known Mitch for almost 20 years. It was a privilege and an honor to call him a friend and have him in my life. He was there for when you needed things done and to see the joy and beauty in the world under the water. He is and always will be an inspiration to live life to the fullest. The family and I will surely miss him.

I went to St.Paul's grammar school with Mitch, he was always fun loving. When I was dating my husband in high school we all hung out...lots of great memories.
My sincere thoughts and prayers to Kay and Jennifer.

Mitch was the NAUI Instructor that taught me how to dive here in Monterey. He's responsible for giving me the skills and confidence to enjoy my favorite past time and entry into another world.

Thanks so much Mitch. RIP.

We were saddened to hear that Mitch passed away, and our thoughts and prayers are with Kay, Jennifer, and family. We met Mitch several years ago when he and his family were in Chico visiting Fran and Nick Tzugaris and family, and we could tell that he was a real special man. He lived a good life and will be well remembered by the many lives he touched.

I met Wayne when we were little guys at St. Paul's grammar school and living on the same block played together for many a year.

We both went to Riordan High and were in some of the same classes together.

After graduation we didn't see much of each other just on occasions.

The graduation class at Riordan has a get together and would meet once a year at Christmas time and we would have a couple of drinks, lunch and catch on each others life's.
Rest in peace my Friend.

Mitch was and still is a great guy. He certified me about 8 years ago. A great teacher.

Wayne and I worked together for a number of years at Station 14 in the 1990s.

Capt. Mitchell was without doubt one of the fittest and most competent officers I ever worked with in my 30 years in the San Francisco Fire Department.

My condolences to his family.
