He was born in Manchester on September 9, 1943 to Robert E. and Dorothy A. (Carlin) Carty Sr.. He graduated from Bishop Bradley High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Keene State College. He also did further studying at the University of New Hampshire. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
Mr. Carty was an English teacher for many years. He first taught at Southside Junior High School in Manchester, then at McKelvie Middle School in Bedford for 11 years. He later worked at the Moore Center and taught driver's education at Mr. K's Driving School, both in Manchester.
In his youth, he enjoyed running, both on track and in road races and was a soccer coach. He also enjoyed all New England sports teams and followed politics and current events. He was a member of the National and New Hampshire Education Associations.
He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Rev. Robert E. Carty Jr.; and two sisters, Kathleen Fenner and Dorothy Cerro.
The family includes three children, William J. Carty Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Warner Robins, GA, Brian Carty of Durham, NC and Annalise Carty of Manchester; a stepson, Bruce Thomas of Vermont; two grandchildren, Grace and Joshua Carty; three sisters, Patricia Crotty of Manchester, Marguerite Manseau of Vernon, CT and his twin sister, Elizabeth Long of Newburyport, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at St. Anthony Church, 172 Belmont St., Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, or the Alzheimer's Association.
Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester assisted the family with arrangements.
