Mrs. Madeline H. Landis

Madeline H. Landis, age 103, passed away November 28, 2012 at the Methodist Country House where she had resided since 1993. Mrs. Landis was born in New Church, VA in 1909, the daughter of Maurice and Annie Hancock. She was educated in the local VA school system before coming to Wilmington and enrolling in Beacom Business School, now Goldey-Beacom College. While in Wilmington, she met and married Harry Landis and enjoyed an over 50 year marriage. He passed away in 1984. She spent most of the middle years of her life as a bookkeeper with Simon Wholesale Florist in Wilmington and volunteered her spare time with the Altar Guild at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church where she had been a member for well over 60 years. Upon arrival at the Methodist Country House, Mrs. Landis worked in the Gift Shop and made sure her new friends got driven to their scheduled appointments with her assistance. This was a trademark during her life as she was always most dedicated to helping family and others when the situation required. Mrs. Landis is survived by her son H. James Landis and his wife Lorna, grandchildren Barbara A. Thomas and her husband Frederick and James D. Landis and his wife Karen, as well as great-grandchildren Chelsea and Madeline Thomas and Kirsten and Cassidy Landis, and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend its thanks to the Health Care Center staff and employees of Methodist Country House who graciously gave of their time, training and talents in caring for Madeline during her stay with them. Friends and family may visit from 10 to 11 am on Wednesday December 5, 2012 at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707 followed by a funeral service at 11 am. Interment will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 1301 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
