Sarah Tompson Obituary

Published by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory - Wilmington on Oct. 9, 2013.
Sarah B. Tompson, age 90, passed away on October 9, 2013 at her residence at Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, DE. Survived by husband of 64 years, Reade Y. Tompson, three daughters, Matilda P. Tompson of Waimea, HI, Nancy T. Farrar (Clarence) of Stokesdale, NC, and Susan T. Sprinkle (Mike) of Newark, DE; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister, Nelle B. Byrd, of Blacksburg, SC, and nieces Evelyn Byrd of Augusta GA and Cathy Roberts (Paul) of Blacksburg, SC. Mrs. Tompson was born and raised in Augusta, GA. She earned her RN and BS degree in nursing at Duke University, Durham, NC, then remained there on the staff of the Nursing School for two years, teaching anatomy and physiology. After her marriage she came to Wilmington where she became an active volunteer in many areas. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 63 years, she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, held a number of positions in the Women's Association (was chosen Woman of the Year in 1974), sang in the choir, was editor of the church newsletter, assisted with the Leisure Club and volunteered regularly in the church office. Over the years before her husband retired, she also served as a Girl Scout leader, participated in AAUW groups, was a member of the Washington Heights Junior Women's Club, and a poll worker at election time. For 25 years she and her husband danced with the Pi R Squares dance group, then, after he retired, they traveled extensively on their sailboat, and then by RV, for more than 20 years. The family wishes to express our heartfelt and sincere thanks to the staff of Willow Brook Court, the Cokesbury Village Health Center, for the excellent care Sarah received from a skilled and caring staff during her year and a half stay. And during her final days Delaware Hospice more than lived up to their motto of "Choice, Care Comfort". A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Monday, October 14, at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE. Interment in the Memorial Garden of Westminster Church will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Cokesbury Village Health Center, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707; to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W. 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806; or to your favorite charity.
