Paul Whalen

Paul Whalen, 83, of Rocky Hill CT and Vero Beach, FL, beloved husband of Pauline (Chase) Whalen, died on October 18, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He formerly lived in West Hartford and Newington. Paul was born on December 8, 1929 in Hartford to Thomas and Margaret (Guinan) Whalen and attended Prince Tech. He left school to join the Navy where he was assigned as an Airman 1st Class on the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. In 1953 he married Pauline, and together they had 6 children. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Rockledge Country Club – the same place where they celebrated their wedding 60 years ago. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Paul worked as a Fire Fighter for the West Harford Fire Department for 28 years serving as the Motor Pump Operator on Engine 3. Paul then worked for the Hartford Insurance Group as a professional chauffeur until 1996. Paul and Pauline spent their retirement years between their home in Connecticut and a winter home in Vero Beach, Florida. He was an avid golfer, billiards player and Red Sox Fan. Paul was always ready with a helping hand to assist his family or friends whatever the need – he will be missed by many. Paul is survived by his loving wife Pauline, his children Mike and Betsey Whalen of South Yarmouth, MA, Doug and Marie Whalen of Estero, FL, Brian and Josee Whalen of Rocky Hill, Jeff and Nancy Whalen of Shelton, and Margaret "Meg" Domina and her partner Luis Calderon of Bristol. Paul is survived by his 12 grandchildren Lance, Michael, and Ryan Whalen and his wife Teresa, Shannon, Sean Whalen and his wife Heather , Colin, and Scott Whalen, Lindsey DeJohn and her husband Ben, Kyra Whalen, Derrick, Caitlin, and Joshua Domina, his 7great grandchildren Milie, Kaydence, Liam, Sydney, Kayla, Shane and Colby; his sister-in law Karen Whalen, of East Windsor and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda and his two brothers Tom and Jim Whalen. Paul's funeral service will be held Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. from the Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spirit, Newington. Interment will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fisette - Batzner Funeral Home.
