Anna (Anne) Schoon,, age 98, of Holland and formerly of Highland, IN, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014. Anne was a strong, quiet, humble person who lived a faithful life of prayer, service, and love for others, especially her family.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband, John A. of Highland, IN; sister, Harriet VanderVeer; brother-in-law, Richard Vander Veer; and step-son, Rev. Jon Mark Schoon.
She is survived by her sister Evelyn (Al) Hanko, six nieces and nephews, her step-children Dale and Arlene Schoon of Dyer, IN; and Mary Kay Schoon of Holland. Her step-grandchildren are JR (Michele) Schoon of Ludington, MI; David Schoon of Albia, IA; Leslie (Marc) Monday of Kirkland, WA; Kathryn (Joel) Schoon Tanis of Holland; and Gretchen (Phil) Schoon Tanis of Holland. She was loved and cherished by ten great-grandchildren. Her brother-in-law, Milton Schoon, of Janesville, WI also survives her.
Anne was born December 3, 1915, to Nickolas and Kate Vos Koster in the Roseland area of Chicago. Her working career began in the x-ray department of Roseland Hospital followed by her Registered Nurse Diploma in 1945 from Engelwood Hospital.
Her nursing career took her from Chicago to San Diego, Palm Springs, and Jackson Hole. She returned to nursing at Engelwood Hospital in Chicago and completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at DePaul University.
At age 51, Anne met and married John Schoon. She moved from city life to country living outside Valparaiso, IN. They remained faithful members of Trinity Reformed Church in Munster, IN. Family and friends enjoyed many joyous outings at The Farm. Anne used her gifts of cooking, baking, knitting and other handwork to bless others.
In 2008 Anne moved from Highland, IN to The Warm Friend in Holland to be closer to the majority of her family where she enjoyed many strolls on 8th Street and Friday night pizza. In December 2013 she moved to Oak Crest Community where she enjoyed her view of nature. The family deeply thanks The Warm Friend, Oak Crest, and Hospice of Holland for the excellent care they gave Anne.
Visitation will be 2:00-3:00pm Monday, April 21 in the Chapel at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Road (use entrance D or E), with the funeral service beginning at 3:00pm. Rev. Dar VanderWal and Rev. Dr. Gretchen Schoon Tanis will officiate. Fellowship following the service will be in the Gathering Place.
Visitation will be 10:00-11:00am Tuesday, April 22 at Trinity Reformed Church, 8411 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN with a Memorial Service at 11:00am. Following the service, burial will take place in the Schoon Family Cemetery in Munster.
