Joseph "Roy" Evans, 86, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at Briarwood Care Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, September 29th at the Coralville United Methodist Church with visitation from 4-7 p.m., Sunday at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Joseph LeRoy Evans was born July 20, 1928, in Columbus Junction; son of Jeremiah and Elsie (Jones) Evans. He attended school in Columbus Junction and at 17, joined the U.S. Navy, serving two years aboard the USS Massey (DD-778). On February 24, 1956, he married Marie Frauenholz at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Through the years, Roy worked for Farmall, drove rock truck, drove for Yellow Cab, worked as a dispatcher, worked at Owen's brush and later made a career with the University of Iowa working in maintenance, from which he retired in 1990. Even in later years, Roy always drove with one foot on each pedal and a hand on the horn, in true cabbie-fashion. He was a charter member of the Coralville United Methodist Church, past member of the Iowa City VFW and American Legion and Moose Lodge. He will be remembered for his loving, protective demeanor and as a faithful servant in Christ. His family includes his wife, Marie; children, Margie Evans of Wapello Robert Evans (Carol) of Coralville, Dawn Evans (deceased) and Craig Evans (Kim) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Josie, Buddy, Eric, Gabriel, Chelsea, Codie, Colton, Kyle, Great-Grandchildren; Elise, Mia, Brady, Emma, Trey and Trevor; siblings, Delmore Evans (Laverta) and Margaret Dunnahoo (Bud); brother-in-law, Ken Frauenholz (Jean) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dawn; brother, Tom (Esther) Evans and several nieces and nephews. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Roy's family and his services.
