Published by Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Mar. 6, 2015.
On March 6, 2015, our beloved father was called to rest by God at the age of 81. Charles A. Mayo, Jr., was the second child of the late Charles A. Mayo, Sr., and Lucille Mayo. He was born April 2, 1933, in Richmond Virginia. Sonny or Chuck as he was affectionately known attended schools in Richmond and graduated from Armstrong High School before enlisting into the U.S. Air Force. He flew 53 combat missions in Korea and 101 combat missions in Vietnam earning the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, along with several other medals. His specialty was in the field of communications. He retired as a Technical Sergeant, after serving twenty years. Thereafter, he began a second 20-year career working for Pacific Telesis, which later became AT&T, followed by a 19-year career working for H&R Block. He married the late Audrey L. Townsend and had four sons and two daughters from their union. He married a second time to the late Shirley A. Smith, enlarging the count of his children by four more through the addition of Shirley's two daughters from a prior marriage and two more daughters from their union. He furthered his education by attending San Jose City College followed by San Jose State University earning a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Industrial Technology 1981. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed many hobbies including, boating and fishing, watching golf and football, photography, traveling, genealogy, and was a member of the American Legions. Charles is survived by his children: Shirlyn Smith, Reginald Mayo, Michael Mayo, TaJuana (Mayo) King, Kathy (Smith) Sparks, Donna (Mayo) Cole, Anthony Mayo, Charlene (Mayo) Weiss, and Christal (Mayo) Kass. He is also survived by three brothers, Ricardo "Ricky" Mayo, Tyrone Mayo, and Billy Pride, along with 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Two siblings, Reginald Mayo and Jean Mayo preceded him in death, as well as one son, Ramon "Mony" Charles Mayo. He will be missed by all who knew him, for he left to us a very rich legacy. Charles you are gone, but you will never be forgotten.

On behalf of the Charity Family and extended family and friends, we are really saddened by the loss of our beloved Chuck. He was a strong contributor to our scholarship fund and helped a whole lot with the genealogy of the family. On top of that, he was a great friend to all of us, especially to me and Gloria Harver. We chatted regularly via e-mail and we send hugs and lots of love. Chuck will be greatly missed! Please stay in touch with us!
