Phyllis Nelson Obituary

Published by Lane Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Service - Canfield Chapel on Apr. 15, 2015.
Phyllis Lorraine Nelson, 92 Boardman: Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2015 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Anstrom Chapel, 8387 Tod Ave., Boardman for Phyllis L. Nelson, 92, of Boardman who entered eternal rest Wednesday evening at Hospice House of Poland. Phyllis was born October 15, 1922 in Henry, South Dakota, a daughter of the late Rev. Albert J. and Louella Repp Oyer. She met the love of her life, David E. Nelson, at Boardman High School from which they both graduated in 1941. After David's service in the United States Navy, they married on May 18, 1946. They shared 59 years of loving marriage before David passed away August 22, 2005. She worked for Stambaugh Thompson and McKelvey's Department Store prior to her marriage. She returned to the workplace in 1968, working as a switchboard operator for North Side Hospital for a short period of time. In 1969 Clarence R. Smith, Jr., whom she referred to as "the best boss in the world,"  hired her as a receptionist at Compco Metal Products where she remained until her retirement in 1989. To her friends and family, she was known as "The Queen of the One Liner" due to her quick wit and incredible sense of humor. She left her loved ones with unforgettable phrases on a variety of topics, including her childhood, spring storms and dying gracefully. Phyllis's sense of fashion was nothing short of glamourous. Knowing the importance of a fully coordinated outfit, complete with the proper accessories, she never missed an opportunity to go shopping. Babies and beautiful flowers brought tears to her eyes and a smile to her face. She loved going on rides through Mill Creek Park and watching the seasonal changes. As a member of Boardman United Methodist Church, her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her. Phyllis leaves her son Dennis and his wife, Anne, of Montague, Michigan; her daughter Barbara Bestic and her husband, Mark, of Boardman; three "grandbabies", Mark, Matthew and Michael, her sister, Vivian Harmon of Boardman, along with several nieces and nephews. In recent months Lauren and Gabriella brought a special ray of sunshine to her life. Besides her parents and her husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by a brother, Emerson Oyer. Phyllis' family would like to thank Dr. Scott Agnew, the staff of Masternick Memorial Health Care Center and the nurses and aides at Hospice House who provided not only excellent care, but also friendship to Phyllis over the past several years.  They would also like to thank Phyllis's special angels Kathy, Carly and Sharon who lovingly cared for Phyllis allowing her to remain in her home as long as possible. Material contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514. Friends may call on Sunday, April 19th from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
