Joseph P Summa, DDS, Col. USA-Ret. (Jan 1, 1921-Sep 12, 2012). Joe Summa of Alamo Heights, San Antonio, TX passed away Wednesday September 12, 2012. Joe (91) was born to first generation immigrants, Paul V. and Maria Grace Summa who moved from Italy in 1887. Joe was the eldest of three brothers Thomas, Charles and Paul and one sister, Jean. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Thelma Laylon, son, Henry Paul and daughter, Maria Jane. Upon retirement from the US Army in 1971, Joe taught periodontics, dental lab and post graduate biology at the University of Connecticut, Georgetown Dental School and the University of Texas Health Science Centers at Houston and San Antonio where he ultimately retired from teaching. Joe was a devout Catholic and member of Saint Anthony de Padua. He is survived by one brother; Paul, four children; Tim Summa of San Antonio, TX, Margaret Corbit of Mesa, AZ, Kathryn Burk of San Antonio, TX and Stephan Summa of New York City, NY, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be on Monday, September 17, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough. ROSARY AND FUNERAL MASS TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 10:00 A.M. ST. ANTHONY DE PADUA 102 LORENZ RD. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your beloved. There are never any right words to express how deeply sad I am for the pain your family is enduring at this difficult time.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service in defense of our rights and freedom.

His commitment to family, friends, our community, and to serving our great nation leaves a wonderful legacy. May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.
