John Joseph Carmody

John Joseph Carmody, age 68, of Melrose, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at his home. John was born July 3, 1946, to Matt F. and Catherine A. (O'Brien) Carmody in Ottumwa, Iowa. He attended Melrose schools and graduated from Albia High School, class of 1964. John attended Centerville Junior College and graduated in 1966 before entering the United States Army and serving his country in Vietnam. He was a decorated soldier. John was employed at the John Deere Des Moines Works and the Iowa Department of Transportation. John moved back to Melrose after retirement. He was very active in St. Patrick's Church and the American Legion Post 685 Melrose, Iowa. John had a strong Irish heritage and was a huge Notre Dame fan. He accomplished much in life and his family was proud of him. John is survived by his brothers, Patrick (Kathy) Carmody of Solon, and Michael (Linda) Carmody of Ankeny; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Carmody of Tucson, AZ; an aunt, Betty McCormick; 6 nieces and nephews; 12 great nieces and nephews; and 1 great-great niece. He is also survived by numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Catherine; and his brother, Donald Carmody. John will be missed by all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday June 30, 2015, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose, with Father Patrick Lumsden officiating. Burial will follow services at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Melrose, with military rites provided by the American Legion, of Melrose, Albia and Lovilia. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 29, 2015 at John's home in Melrose (2370 520th Ave.) with his family present throughout. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Melrose Veterans Memorial Fund (John Parkins)
