Evan Tanner Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Apr. 12, 2016.
Our beloved son and brother, Evan Jacob Tanner, passed away at the tender age of 18, on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 with his adoring family at his side. He was above all a loving son and brother, with an immense heart and a contagious smile that would light up a room. Evan had the gift of making everyone he met feel connected, loved and understood. He was a loyal and caring friend. Evan's home away from home was St. Mark's Episcopal Church where he was an acolyte and he enjoyed the love and support of the St. Mark's family. Evan loved participating in any activity that would be of help to others. He especially loved not just feeding the homeless but like he said "Having the privilege of hearing their stories." Evan attended The Acorn School in 2001. He then continued at Saint Luke's Episcopal from PK-4 to the completion of his 8th grade in 2012. Evan continued his education at St. Anthony's Catholic High School from 2012 -2014. Evan then transferred to Samuel Clemens High School where he was to graduate this coming June. Evan was planning to attend Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina this fall. Evan was a gifted athlete. He loved participating in track and field and cross country. Evan's favorite thing was to be outdoors. He loved fishing, kayaking, exploring and anything that had to do with the beach. But above all he loved being with his family and friends and making them smile. Evan is survived by his parents: Shawn and Rebeca Tanner; sisters Jordan Tanner and Ryan Tanner; grandfather Jorge Ferrer; grandmother Sue Tanner; grandfather Alan Tanner; aunt Shelly Loosemore; uncle Tony Tanner; numerous cousins and many wonderful friends. At the visitation guests and friends are welcome to speak and share anything that they feel will enhance in celebrating the short, but passionate life of our beloved Evan. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 25th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough. MEMORIAL SERVICE TUESDAY APRIL 26, 2016 6:00 PM ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 315 E. PECAN Interment will be private for family.

Dear Tanner Family -- I'm so sorry for the loss of your dear son, grandchild, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. I didn't know Evan, but I've heard nothing but praise about him. I could never write anything that could ease your hearts, but I quote Don McClean from his ode to Vincent Van Gogh in the song, "Vincent," by saying -- "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you." My sincere condolences to your entire family.

April 28, 2016

My deepest condolences go out to Evan's family in this time of sadness and grieving. My name is Allie Farris, and I met Evan the summer before our freshman year at St. Anthony's together. I'll never forget seeing him for the first time in his cowboy boots and a big cowboy hat, and noticing for the first time how handsome he was. We didn't have any classes together our freshman year, but sophomore year we had geometry class together. This is how we got to know each other better, and eventually ended up dating for a few months. He was my very first boyfriend. I'm so very lucky to have had such a special person in my life, and to have met such a beautiful soul. It warms my heart to know that we made each other so happy in those few months that we were together. I took him to my senior homecoming on September 27, 2015, and that was the last day I saw him. In a way, this was a chance for all of his St. Anthony family to be reunited with him one last time. I'll never forget how we had so much fun that night. It'll definitely be engraved in my memory forever.

Evan, we all miss you more than words can explain. I'm extremely thankful for the memories we made together. I'll never forget that sweet smile of yours and how you always called me Alliecat. The song "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran will always be our song, because that's the one song I vividly remember off the top of my head when we danced to it at homecoming together. Thank you for believing in me and making me smile, even when I didn't want to. Thank you for dancing with me all the times I asked you to, even when you had convinced yourself that you couldn't. It's been hard trying to accept the fact that you're gone, but I know you wouldn't want any of us to be sad all the time. If anything, I try to enjoy life in a deeper sense now because you've inspired me to live life to the fullest. Heaven gained such an incredible angel... A piece of my heart will always be with you. I now find comfort in beautiful sunrises and sunsets, because they were your favorite. I love and miss you so very much sweet boy. You and your family are in my prayers.

I didn't know Evan for that long, but when I did know him, he was everything a friend could ask for. It makes me sad that I never had a chance to say goodbye proper, but I know he rests in a better place. I am saddened by the loss of such a wonderful person, and I will keep him in my thoughts.

I was glad to get to meet Evan this year. He was the first person I met on my first day of school, he helped me find my classes and was very sweet. He is a kind person and heaven got themselves an angel to soon. He made a lot of perplex days by just walking into a room with a smile on his face. I'll always remember that smile he had walking into the school. He may not have known me but he took time out of his day to help and be there for me. My condolences on your loss he was a great and amazing friend. I will never forget that.

I had the privilege of knowing Evan from my second period class this year. I didn't know him to well, but we talked quite a bit in class about everything. He was very open about his future and what he wanted to do, and while I didn't know Evan well enough there is one thing I can say of all the people who have come up and talked to me he was the most genuine. Evan never came off as mean or uninterested as others who talked to me did. He always seemed like he cared about what I had to say and wanted to listen to what I had to say. The one thing I regret is not being able to know more about him. Evan was a man with a heart of gold always willing to talk to someone and meet someone new a personality I'm jealous I don't have. My prayers are with the family for losing someone so outstanding and one of a kind.

Evan was a wonderful caring friend and I am so glad I had him in my life. Last year he was in my lunch so I would sit with him along with a few other friends almost every day. And he was always really funny and awesome to talk to and loved cheering people up. And we became pretty good friends. I met him through AFJROTC because he was one of the cadets in my class and he was always very respectful to everybody and well behaved and everyone absolutely loved having him around he was extremely well liked by everyone around him and made them smile. He'll always be forever in our hearts.

Evan Tanner was one of the greatest friends I've had that i have missed for a very long time. Last year, his junior, my freshman year, we met in ROTC class. I remember just how we met, too. Colonel, on the first day of school, told the flight to turn around to the person behind them and tell them three things about each other. Once he said to start, Tanner immediately turned around to me and said with the biggest smile, "Hi there! I'm Tanner!" He brought a hand out to shake mine. The way he spoke just filled me with happiness. He was always so happy. From that point on, we talked in the morning, and during lunch time in school. He told me about himself and i did the same. We grew closer, he always made me laugh! He told me I was "his little freshman sister" and he was my "big junior brother".
Sadly one day, I was alone, and a sex offender verbally harrassed me, I was shaken, and who was I to go to first? I told Evan. I remember him telling me "Biviana! You have my number! You can text me, I would've been there in a heartbeat!"
I wish I could say the same now.
I am truly sorry for your loss, we will all miss him.
I'm always going to miss Tanner. He was a true friend for the short time I knew him.
God bless Evan, and his family, and friends.
He'll make the angels smile as he does, and with his happiness, make the sun brighter up ahead.
