Christie - Joe & I just learned of Larry's passing last week and were very saddened by this news. I have read many of the tributes to Larry and am amazed at what an impact he had on others and what a truly genuine individual he was. Joe & I enjoyed catching up with Larry at the gym and running/tri events. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time and hope you find peace in the days ahead.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Covelli. He was my 5th grade teacher at Allard Elementary (80-81 school year), as well as my track coach at Moon HS. I have 2 distinct memories I would like to share.
The first was in 5th grade. Christmas was approaching and I couldn't figure out what gift to get Mr. C. My Mom finally decided that we would get him a bottle of wine! (imagine doing that today). So here we are all gathered around Mr. C while he is opening these Christmas gifts and his expression when he opened the bottle of wine was just priceless! At the end of that day there were 23 "favorite teacher" coffee mugs and 1 bottle of wine on his desk. Who was his favorite student? :)
The 2nd memory was years later, I think I was home from college and ran into Mr. C. During our conversation I referred to my father as "my old man". I have no idea why I used those words as I had never done that before. Mr. C did not like that at all and called me out on it and told me that was very disrespectful. He was 100% right and the lesson was learned! I never used those words again. Always the teacher.
Over the years I would run into Mr. C around Moon, whether it was on the Montour Trail, or a restaurant and I always enjoyed talking with him. He was always so friendly, happy and that smile on his face. Just a great guy who will certainly be missed!
To the family of Mr. Covelli, I am so sorry for your loss!

Christie,

I want to express my sympathy to you and your family for your loss. Larry was a fantastic teacher and even more importantly, a wonderful person. I consider myself fortunate to have known him and to have worked with him. After I retired I would see him occasionally at track meets. He was always so personable and a joy to talk with. I always enjoyed seeing you two as well. You and Larry were always so positive and supportive. I will always cherish fond memories of Larry. God bless you and your family. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Sincerely,

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Covelli as a 6th grade teacher at Bon Meade in probably one of his first years of teaching. Our class was a challenge and I was shy and bullied. He was a calm and kind soul and I have never forgotten him all these years. He will be an asset to the Angels.

Heartfelt coldolences to his wife, children and family. May God's peace comfort and strengthen you in your time of need.

Dear Christie and Family,

On behalf of Larry's many colleagues at Moon Area School District, you have our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences.

Everyone who worked with Larry over the years knew him to be an outstanding educator, an amazing coach, and a wonderful man. He loved what he did as much as anyone who ever loved being a teacher, coach, mentor and friend to just about everyone! He touched so many lives in so many good ways.

We pray that you will find consolation in knowing that he has been called home to eternal rest, and may you be comforted by all of the loving memories that were made when you were together in mind, body and spirit.

Peace be with you...

Very saddened to hear of the passing of Larry. Will always have fond memories of him coming to Sewickley on Tuesday evenings to be part of our "Club Sewickley " brutal 10 miles runs, all of the intervals we did at the Moon H.S. track and races competed in over the years.
He was a great athlete but even a better person. Larry has left a fine legacy having been instrumental in so many students lives as an educator and mentor.

Larry Covelli was a great man, and I'm so sorry for your loss. He was the kind of person who left an indelible mark on anyone who had the good fortune to know him. He coached my daughter in cross country, and inspired her to reach deep inside and give her best every day. The way he cheered on each runner in a personal way, and the way he cared for them was admirable in every way. He will be missed by all who knew him, and especially by those who loved him the most. My heart goes out to his family. May you have peace in knowing that he made the world a better place. My condolences for your loss.

July 27, 2016

So sorry to hear about the loss of this great man! He was my 6th grade teacher at Allard school in 1981. He had the best demeanor of any teacher I have ever had, and he loved the kids! He knew how to diffuse situations in and out of the classroom with class. Years later as an adult I would run into him on the track with his high school team or when he was running in Moon or Sewickley. Larry always had the time to say hello and chat with a bright smile on his face.
I will always remember the special things he helped me with.

I went to the same gym as Larry for several years and I am also a teacher at a neighboring school district. When I would see him we would talk about teaching and I remember how happy he was when he told me he retired. I didn't know him well, but he was always a friendly, familiar face to me. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I pray that God blesses his family with peace and comfort in the days to come.

To Larry's family,

As a student at Moon Area, and one who ran track I was very familiar with Mr. Covelli. He was one of my favorite teachers, and someone I greatly respected. He treated us all the same, and I can assure you all who passed thru the district have only great things to say about him. I ran into Mr. Covelli more than any former students/teachers over the years since I graduated in 2001. Whether it was at a random store, at the gym, or just saw him jogging on the streets. Each time we chatted, had a laugh, and I assumed I would see him again soon. I just wanted to let you know he will be missed, and his impact in the classroom/track made me a better person. My sympathies to all who loved him, and may his memory live on.

Chris, please accept my sincere and heart-felt sympathy. As you may know Larry & I started teaching on the same day at Moon Schools and shortly thereafter began running in many 5 & 10K races. We knew each other for a very long time and I will miss having breakfast and texting with him. I was with Larry when he accepted Jesus as his Lord & Savior. Although we will miss him greatly; he will now be forever healthy, running, and waiting for us to enter Heaven. At the end of this Life, I will remember Larry as in 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Our Dearest Chris & family,

Such sadness lies within our family at this time. Larry became an official family member 11 years ago but he entered our hearts the first time we were all introduced. His smile, compassion, his love for you and your families and of course his tolerance for all of the Colella girls, made him a very special man to each and every one of us.

No longer will he have to fight the pain of this ugly disease. He will have only the eternal peace and happiness that Our Lord has blessed him with.
God Bless and keep you Larry. And Chris, God bless you for being the best, partner, soul mate, and love of his life.

All Our Love
The Colella Cousins

It is always hard when someone that has such an impact on your life passes away. There are no words to say how grateful I am to have known Mr. Covelli. He taught me how to believe in myself. He made me a better runner, a better student, but most importantly, he taught me invaluable life lessons that I will never forget. Mr. Covelli made everyone he ever interacted with a better person. He will be sorely missed, but he will live on in the many student's and athlete's hearts he touched.

Mr. Covelli was a strong, caring man who made a tremendous impact on all those who had the pleasure of meeting him. Generations of Moon Area Cross Country and Track runners have been touched by his strength and moral fortitude. Mr. Covelli had an amazing ability to take students with little confidence and athleticism and turn them into confident, fit runners that made a difference in their community. From the first-place varsity athlete to the last JV runner left on the course, Mr. Covelli cared for each runner under his respected leadership. He played many roles in my life: Teacher, Coach, Neighbor, Father-Figure, Mentor, Leader, and Friend. His memory lives on in the character of hundreds of Moon alumni whose character was impacted for the better from having met Mr. Covelli. "Covelli's Army" is alive and well, keeping the mission that it is not simply enough for a Cross Country program to develop fast runners; Moon Tigers are champions of character, as well.
