Matthew James Dillon, 21, of Bedford, NH, died August 27, 2016. Born in Manchester, NH on September 8, 1994. Son of Michael and Carol (Smith) Dillon. Grandson of the late Betty (Memes) and James Smith and Mary Dillon (Nana) and the late Robert E. Dillon. Matthew leaves behind his Nana, parents, sister, Megan and her fiancé Patrick Roach of Jamaica Plain, MA and brother, Patrick and girlfriend Julie Sandschafer of Chicago, IL. He leaves behind many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and countless friends. Matthew was known for his genuine smile, endless optimism, and his ability to make friends out of everyone he met. He was endlessly interested in the world around him, and he never shied away from a challenge or new adventure. Matthew loved to travel, and he explored three continents and many foreign cultures in his time. His positive outlook and easygoing attitude brought peace and warmth to the world around him. His earnest, goofy demeanor brought smiles to all those that he touched. Matthew graduated from Bedford High School in 2012, where he was an athlete and musician. Matthew was proud to be a part of the Bedford High School lacrosse team where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a 19-0 season during his senior year. He played football, and contributed to a winning football program's early years. He was an avid skier, and was particularly fond of the trails of Sugarbush, VT. Matthew was also a talented musician, and created music from an early age. He was a songwriter, and his band competed in Bedford High School's Battle of the Bands. His love of music would carry on throughout his life, from his hometown of Bedford to the cobblestone streets of Rome, Italy. Matthew enrolled at Emmanuel College in the fall of 2012, where he studied Political Science and Economics. He was an avid athlete and beloved teammate on the Saints Lacrosse team, where he wore the number 39 and was a member of three-time GNAC Conference Championship teams (2014, 2015, 2016). Academically, Matthew was also an active member of the Emmanuel College Model United Nations team, for which he competed at conferences against the likes of Harvard, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania. In the spring of 2016, Matthew became the youngest Dillon sibling to graduate from Emmanuel College, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Minor in Economics. Matthew's life cannot not be measured by its length, but rather by the fullness of his experiences, and the countless lives that he made better. Matthew was an athlete, a musician, a scholar, and world traveler. He was a devoted son, a loving brother, a cheerful cousin, a kind nephew, and a loyal friend. He was an unceasing source of fun, pride, and joy to those who knew him, and he will be missed by all. Arrangements: Matthew's wake will be held from 4-8pm on Friday, Sept. 2 at the Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Avenue Manchester, NH. His Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10:00A.M. at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford, NH. Matthew will be laid to rest at St. Paul's Cemetery, Hersey St., Hingham, MA on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:00P.M. In lieu of flowers, the Dillon family respectfully asks you to consider donating to the Matthew James Dillon Scholarship Fund at Emmanuel College (Designation: Matthew James Dillon Fund). Donations can be made online at alumni.emmanuel.edu/make-a-gift or via check to Office of Development, Emmanuel College, 400 The Fenway, Boston, MA 02115.

I've met Matt recently and have only known him for two weeks. It was my first day working at IGS, and I was a bit shy. Matt came up to me and introduced himself. I told him that he look like my history teacher from back when I was in eighth grade, and showed him a picture of my teacher. We both laughed. He and I became cubicle buddies during the two weeks I got to know him. He helped me get comfortable at the new job. He gave me a bag of Doritos, told me about how he was looking to go into law school, how he just got a new apartment, and how he is into economics and public policy. We talked about news articles, magazines, and books we enjoyed, since I'm a striving journalist. I thought we would become good friends after that. Then I heard the news at the offie. I was so sad. All I kept thinking was, "too soon." To Matt's family, whom I've never met, I'm so sorry. My deepest condolences and prayers goes to all of you. Matt helped me get comfortable during my first days at work with his warming personality and great sense of humor. During the brief time I spent working with him, he showed me great kindness that I'll never forget. I'm so happy to have known him.

We knew Matt through our son Jared and the many years of football and lax- beginning in 3rd grade when Mike was one of the coaches! While attending his services last week, I couldn't help but reflect on what a blessed life Matt had. The many people that came out were a testament to the many friends and lives he touched. I hope you take solace in the fact that Matt's years here were blessed with every opportunity from athletics, to music, to travel and to the fun, rich company of family and friends. Most evident was the solid love and support of his parents, siblings and extended family. He was raised in love and for that you should find peace. Our most sincere sorrow during this period of grief and hope that, in time, the tears will turn to smiles for "the big goofy red-haired angel" (as is was so eloquently put!) His blessings will live on in so many until we see him again.

We truly believe your beautiful boy accomplished all he was charged to achieve in his short time here. Through his example, he left his parents, sister, brother, extended family and friends with the lessons he taught through the manner in which he lived. In Matt's memory, we will all try to go forward with a passion to be kind, gentle and loving toward others and do so in and adorably funny and tender way. Really, Matt!! You made all of this look so natural, but the rest of us may have to work diligently to achieve what came so easy to you. Your reflection will shine brightly through each of us as we are all better people for having been touched by Matthew James Dillon.
With our sympathy, prayers, love and a promise to support each of you in these weeks and months of unbearable grief...

To you all,
Our son Antonio and his friends have shared so many fond memories of their times with Matt. Ray and I will always remember him as the polite young man, as part of the crowd in our kitchen! As the poem says "He is not dead, he is just away!" We can't even imagine your grief, but he will always be remembered as young and vibrant and will live on in so many different peoples lives. All of our prayers go with you as you try to find some peace at this time. As the tears lessen may the laughter build as you share all of your memories and know how many lives such a young man touched!
From the Garcia family, Ray, Nichola, Edward and especially Antonio xxxx

Michael,
My heart aches for you and the family at the loss of your fine son who held such promise for a full and impactful life. Judging by the comments and obituary it is clear that he made a grand impact on the lives of others in a relatively short time.

It is in the times such as this when nothing makes sense and our hearts are breaking that God promises to meet us. Because God willingly sacrificed his son for the trespasses of us all, we know that we will see our loved ones again in Heaven. Including your Dad and Matthew.

May the joyful memories you shared and the promise of a reunion in paradise provide some measure of solace in the otherwise awful valley.

Honestly, I can't fathom what you're going through but offer my prayers to you and your entire family.

May God Bless and Keep the Dillon's.

I had the great fortune of coaching Matthew at Bedford High School for four years during his football career. I will long remember his hard work, strength, sincere nature, smile and desire to get better each day His dedication to his team helped shaped the foundation of the program. We still speak of the strong impression he left upon our team and coaches. I have wonderful memories of Matthew, for that I remain most grateful. My thoughts and prayers are with you

I became friends with Matt my sophomore year at Emmanuel and in the time I knew him there was never a moment where he was without a smile on his face, or didn't give a warm welcome to those who crossed his path.
