Frederick Craig Obituary

Published by Keates-Plum Funeral Home on Jan. 1, 2017.
Frederick J. Craig, Jr., 94, of Brigantine, NJ entered into rest surrounded by his loving family on January 1, 2017. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Frederick J. Sr., and Mary Riegel Craig. He was the devoted husband of Thelma Burke Craig whom he married on October 27, 1951 and spent 65 wonderful years with. Frederick was a very proud patriot, lying about his age so he could join the U.S. Army Air Corps early. He honorably served his country from 1941 to 1946, fighting the Japanese in China, Burma and India achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant by war's end. Frederick was a self-employed land lord owning many property's throughout Philadelphia, Florida, New Jersey and as far away as Spain. He was a member of the China, Burma, India Veterans Club and the Brigantine VFW. Frederick had many hobbies such as coin collecting, cooking, gardening, traveling, body building, feeding stray cats, making and sitting in front of fires, and telling stories. Of all of his interests one stood out above all others, which was his love of his family. Frederick will be missed and fondly remembered by his wife; Thelma Craig, daughters; Meryl (Todd Lewison) Craig, Diane Craig, and beloved grandson; Jesse Craig Lewison. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Fred's life celebration memorial service on Thursday January 5, 2017 at 11:00am at the Community Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Brigantine Ave., Brigantine, NJ with Rev John Scotland officiating. A receiving will be held at the church from 10:00am until time of services. Thelma, It saddened me to read of Freddie's passing. I always enjoyed when both of you stopped in to talk. As you know I am away and will not be able to attend Freddie's service, but my thoughts are with you.

Wow, how does one sum up in just a few words the impact Fred had on those around him? I grew up across the street from Fred, Thelma, Meryl and Diane. Thelma and my mother were the closest of friends as were Diane and I, Meryl was our babysitter, and Freddy, the friend you called when you needed absolutely anything. He was kind, funny, and always there to lend a helping hand. He and Thelma loved to travel and took my mother Sylvia (may she rest in peace) with them on some of their adventures. Oh did she enjoy their trips together! I was able to join them on one such adventure to the British Isles when I was about 6 or 7. What fabulous memories our families made on that trip together. "Why don't I get the little girl and little boy some souvenirs"...said a train conductor to Freddie about me and Diane. Clearly the man thought I was a boy with my short hair, but Fred quickly corrected him and tried to console me. We still laugh about that today.
Every holiday, or just because, Thelma and Fred send a letter and pictures of my Mom on some of their trips or of me and my siblings when we were little. When I see the return address, I become elated because I know what I will find inside. I don't think they know how much of an impact that small gesture has had on me over the years.
Fred was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by so many. I am so sad to learn of his passing and pray for Thelma, Meryl, Diane, Todd and Jesse. He gave so much to those around him with his kindness and selflessness. I will treasure the wonderful memories forever.

I consider myself very lucky to have met Freddie and was able to call him my friend. Trips to Brigantine always had to include our visit with Freddie and Thelma. He had such wonderful stories to tell us and always had a little gift for each of us.
Freddie always remembered each of my family and always was interested in how they were doing. He will truly be missed
I'm thankful for wonderful memories.
