Edward Cunniffe Obituary

Published by Gately Funeral Home - Melrose on Feb. 23, 2017.
Edward A. Cunniffe, of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Feb. 23, 2017 at the age of 57. To talk about Ed is to tell you that Ed was the perfect gentlemen, who always thought about others first and himself second. He was kind, considerate, smart, funny, the nicest person you could meet but truly understated. He would always have a grin on his face and a kind word for all. Ed was a family man, he loved spending time with his wife of 30 years Ellen and his kids Jackii, Chris and Becca whether it was walking, hiking, biking, going to the movies or simply playing a board game. He was a devoted sports dad going to all the kid's games and even coaching for some. Ed came from a large but extremely close family where spending time with them or having a game night with siblings was common. He was an avid Boston sport's fan especially the Bruin's, Patriot's and Celtics. He went to many Bruin's games and when not able to go would root for them from home. He and Ellen had the enviable opportunity to have a special dinner with Terry O'Reilly and his wife at the Capri restaurant, which was a highlight in Ed's life. He was an avid lover of classic cars and was always working on his 70 Chevy Nova. He had an old Studebaker that he had not started working on but was excited to rebuild at some point. During the summer months Ed could be found on his motorcycle whether just taking a ride or going for a ride with his son Chris. He was a natural athlete who excelled at any sport he especially loved playing tennis on Saturdays with his friends Chuck, Scott and Tom. Ed could always be found tinkering on something whether it was his cars, the house, yard, equipment or just re-organizing something he was always doing something productive. He was an incredible fix it guy (we always joked he was MacGyver) as he could truly fix anything with his ingenuity which was inherited from his dad. His biggest fan was his mother-in-law Gladys who always was amazed at how talented he was at fixing anything she would always say "Oh God love Ed he could fix anything". Ed worked at VHB in Watertown and would always be talking about how lucky he was that he had an exceptional boss (Jim and Bob), that he had a job he liked and that the people and the company appreciated him. He loved and appreciated life and even with his heart being what it was he never let it stop him from doing anything including helping people or enjoying life. Ed was the beloved husband of Ellen (Latshaw) Cunniffe. Devoted father of Jackii Cunniffe of Cambridge, Chris Cunniffe & Rebecca Cunniffe, both of Melrose. Loving son of the late Charles W. & Jacqueline L. (Reade) Cunniffe. Caring brother of Charles Cunniffe & his wife Angela of CO, Larry Cunniffe of CA, Charlene Cunniffe & Dick Csaplar of Somerville, Maureen Denison & her husband John of Andover, Eileen Labrecque & her husband Bob of N. Andover, Francine Cunniffe of NH and John Cunniffe & his wife Marie of Westford. Brother in law of Thomas Latshaw & his wife Patty of VA, Christine Pearse & her husband David of NH and Michael Latshaw & his wife Barbara of Stoneham. Son in law of Gladys Latshaw of Melrose. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, March 2nd from 4-8PM. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home on Friday, March 3rd at 8:45AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers you may make donations in Ed Cunniffe's name to: Brigham & Women's Cardiovascular Research and Education Fund #016284 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115.

Dear Cunniffe family -I'm sorry for your loss. We spend so much of our day's at work, it is important that we work with nice people who make our days brighter. Ed was always kind face in the hallway. He was always willing to help and work through any issue. When my husband and I were looking to buy a home, I appreciated him taking the time to tell me about how much he liked living in Melrose. Ed will be missed. His loss makes me appreciate how short life is and how much we should cherish the time we have. I'm sorry for your loss.

A beautiful tribute to my beloved husband Ed, was demonstrated over the past week through the endless outpouring of flowers, food and condolences, sentiments of admiration and respect for the wonderful and gifted man that Ed was. Family from all over the country came to show their respects in Ed's honor: Ed's brother Larry from San Francisco CA, Ed's brother Charles from Aspen CO, Ed's niece Leah from Portland Oregon, Ed's niece Jill from Nashville TN, Ed's nephew Andrew from Houston TX, my brother Tom and his wife Patty from Culpeper VA, my sister Chris and her husband Dave from Laconia NH, my cousin Bob from Dallas TX, my cousin Larry from Short Hills NJ, my cousin Artie, and many cousins and aunts from the Cape, ME and all of MA and New England....and my brother Michael and his wife, Barbara, and her whole family and parents came from all over MA and NJ. The countless friends from Westford, Bedford NH and of course family friends the Feeleys and the McCarthys whom we have vacationed with in Sunapee and the Cape for decades, the Browns with camping and so many other adventures; Sue Collins, Sue Bourque and my game, cards, hang-out friends were all there in person and in spirit. Ed's work VHB has been incredibly supportive and generous and thank you to everyone there for food, flowers and most importantly your sincere words of admiration for Ed. Scott, Charley and Tom, Ed's lifelong friends and tennis buddies are as devastated as we all are; Ed would want you to continue Saturday tennis and play to win! Ed's mother-in-law, Gladys was Ed's biggest fan (aside from me...)always praising and admiring his family devotion, love and hard work around the house and on our cars. Our children Jackii, Chris and Becca have stepped up to the plate through their emotional roller-coaster. Last and NOT least, Ed's sisters Charlene, Eileen, Maureen and Francine and brother John, as well as Charles and Larry, have lost their best friend. They have pulled me through this difficult time. Francine and John created the beautiful, colorful program celebrating Ed's life. If you would like a copy, please let me know. To say thanks to everyone doesn't quite suffice. I feel blessed and thank you to all. Ed will be sorely missed.

Ellen, I remember meeting Ed with you at the square dance awhile back. He was friendly and Bill and I felt comfortable with him.
Mostly, though I remember him from your 60th birthday party. He was warm, friendly and funny (in a good way!). It was evident to all of us that he truly cherished you. I remember the poem he wrote and read about you and your love of games. I was impressed!

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn the loss of Ed, a true gem of man.
with love,
Joyce J.

I've been friends with Ellen and Ed since 1995 and I remember Ed always being so funny and such a happy go lucky man. He helped me one year to put in a new toilet for my then husband Scott. We spent all day at Home Depot picking one out and installing it together. Now, my future husband Rob and I would go camping with Ellen and Ed and Patty Brown this past summer . It was a torental downpour of rain, but we had fun no matter the situation.

He loved Ellen and his kids alot. He will be missed by many.
