Roger Kelley Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Feb. 28, 2017.
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Roger M. Kelley, age 67, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 with his family at his side. Born on May 1, 1949 to wonderful parents, Maxine and William Kelley with one sister, Beverly Spence. On August 1, 1970, Roger married the love of his life, Judy Delores Lee. As written by Roger, he "had a full life of events and experiences, only a few people in the world have had more. Having been born in America and able to travel the world with someone you love is incredible in itself. We traveled from Russia to Hawaii and touched everything in between. As a family, we experienced so much together as only a few have done. No family was ever as tight as ours! I've had many, many friends through my life that made my life full-filling. I always tried my best go give more than I received with any relationship, leaving me with a feeling of fulfillment." Roger is preceded in death by his father, W. R. Kelley and father-in-law, Gerald Lee. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 magnificent years, Judy Kelley and their children, Adam Kelley and wife, Krista; Casey Shannon and husband, Anthony; along with his mother, Maxine Kelley and sister, Beverly Spence; his mother-in-law, Loreta Lee; two grandchildren, Emma Paige Kelley and Landon Max Kelley, niece, Kelley Wendt and many wonderful and fantastic friends and neighbors. Roger's mom and dad started the Home & Patio store in San Antonio where Roger worked his whole life, taking over the family business in 2002 after the death of this dad. He was a member of the San Antonio Mustang Club and a founding member of the Hill Country Kart Club. Roger left us with his heartfelt words: "I could not have asked for a better life experience; my wife and children are incredible people ~ I thank them for traveling with me! It is, what it is…My last thought will be how much I loved Judy! May she cherish our many experiences we had together. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 6th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the chapel at Porter Loring on McCullough. GRAVESIDE SERVICE TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 2017 10:00 AM SUNSET MEMORIAL PARK WITH A MEMORIAL SERVICE TO FOLLOW 11:30 AM SHEARER HILLS BAPTIST CHURCH 12615 SAN PEDRO AVE. Roger left a unique void with all who knew you. I'll always remember his combination of laughter and skepticism! He made larger in character and humor all who were blessed to know him.

The world will indeed be a sadder place without Roger in it to brighten things up and make us laugh. In my mind, I believe one of the first things Roger did when he got to heaven was track down Henry Ford and tell him what awesome cars his company has built! His loved ones are in our prayers and I will truly miss him. Rest in peace, my friend.

Judy and Family, Maxine, Loretta and Beverly:

I was shocked to see the announcement in the paper today. Roger was my oldest friend as our parents brought us together just after we were born. I really was sorry to see this, I don't know, I thought he was going to live forever. He was so upbeat and excited about everything he did. I am sorry that I was not able to visit him more but, working out of town all the time limited what I was able to do in town. Last time I saw him he showed me a part of his car collection, which was wonderful. He was always full of hope and Judy, he always would tell me what a blessing you were to his life. I am out of town again and will miss the visitation but, please know that all our prayers are going out to you guys at this time. We will never forget how he touched our lives. God bless.

To Judy, Adam, Krista, Casey, Maxine and Beverly --
We are all very saddened to learn of Roger's passing. He was one of the most engaging and wonderful characters involved in Business, Motor Racing, and the many other lifestyles that Roger touched. An he touched a LOT of peoples' lives!

I knew Roger because of his great racing background, and we all know that Roger never met a Ford Vehicle he did not love! Roger gave me excellent leads for stories in The San Antonio LIGHT and the EXPRESS-NEWS for the motorsports pages. He was, as others said here, a 'Straight-Shooter' and could tell the most interesting stories about his life and his happiness, and about his close brushes with death. The Kelley Family and Roger are well-respected and we all are sad over Roger leaving us. We knew he was having trouble, but just like Roger, he would hop on a quick go-kart and set a lap-time that none of us could match, even when he was seriously ill!

God love you, Roger, because they threw the mold away after they invented you, and we are all going to massively miss you and your great outlook on life! Roger was the Racers' Racer all through his years, and we hurt now that you are gone, Roger. Bruce

I will miss my long time friend. I hadn't seen Roger in a while, but my memories of him and the enjoyable times we had, mess'n with cars, mostly his, will never be forgotten. He was a kind soul, generous with his time and knowledge. Through him I was able to experience an individual with countless skills, making difficult things look easy.

I hope your new journey will be free of the physical pains you suffered in life. Rest in Peach my friend, Chuck

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Judy, and your family. Roger and I attended elementary, middle, and high school together. I remember what a sweet boy he was and always had a smile on his face. I am so sorry for your loss.

I lost my husband three years ago, and I know how hard it is to lose a loved one so young (60's is young to me). I always thought we would grow old together, but God had better plans for him. I was watching The Today Show this week, and Kathy Lee Gifford made a comment about losing her husband. I will never forget what she said, and I hope you will remember this too. She said that when someone tells her that they are sorry that she lost her husband, she said, " I didn't lose my husband, because I know where he is.")

My wife and I bought our first house in 1999 and we were so lucky to have Roger as our neighbor for eight years. I always enjoyed the conversations we would have standing in his yard or mine, hearing about his many life adventures and his life perspective. He was such a great story teller, and a true "straight-shooter" if there ever was one! But above all else I remember him as a very sincere, kind-hearted person and a true model family man.

Roger will be greatly missed. This is very devistating to everyone that knew him. i have known him for many years as a friend and compeditor. we raced side by side at hwy.16 raceway and he always dug his heels in and fought hard in the # 57 car to go to the front. he was always very cordial and respectful of everyone he met and knew. i am a current shifter kart racer at hill country kart club and admire him for what he did for the racing industry. My blessings go out to his family in this difficult time. God Bless Mark Bray
