Joan Brands Thompson, 78, of South Windsor, beloved wife of Richard N. Thompson passed away peacefully on February 28, 2017 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born July 9, 1938 in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Julia S. Brands. Joan was a graduate of the University of Idaho with a B.S. Degree in Education and a member of Alpha Phi Women's Fraternity. Besides her devoted husband of 56 years, Joan is survived by her daughter Jill and son-in-law Brian O'Connor of So. Glastonbury, CT, son Greg and daughter-in-law Sharen Thompson of Greensboro, North Carolina, son David and daughter-in-law Coreen Thompson of Granby, CT, and seven grandchildren; Brendan, Ryan, Megan, Tera, Jack, Ashley, and Garrett whom she loved dearly. She also leaves her sister Susan and brother-in-law John of Massachusetts as well as two cousins, and several nieces and nephews. Joan was an active fifty plus year member of the Wapping Community Church volunteering her time on many different committees. She was dedicated to her family and her greatest joys were times spent with them especially annual summer vacations near the water. She loved her many friends and enjoyed good times playing tennis and bridge. Her sweet, kind and caring spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Joan's family wishes to thank all the staff at The Harbor at The Village of Buckland Court for their compassionate care for the past several years. Her family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 4-6 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017, 11 a.m., at the Wapping Community Church, 1790 Ellington Rd., South Windsor. Burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wapping Community Church, 1790 Ellington Rd, South Windsor, CT 06074, or the Alzheimer's Association CT Chapter, 200 Executive Boulevard, Suite 4B Southington, CT 06489.
