Thomas A. Campana, 93, of Kent, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Born on April 20, 1923, he was the son of Andrew (Condito) and Angela (Carano) Campana. Tom met Lois Talbott in high school and married her on February 8, 1947. Tom was born and raised in Hubbard, one of 9 children. He left high school early to enlist in 1942 and served our country in the Unites State Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a gunnery specialist on an LST and served in the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns. A member of the greatest generation, he not only experienced war first hand but also had 5 brothers that served as well. He never wanted to talk about his service and he never considered himself a hero, just an American doing what was necessary. Using the GI Bill, in 1946 he attended Youngstown State University where he excelled on the football field and in 1950 earned a degree in Education and his high school diploma at the same time. He began his teaching and coaching career in Youngstown, then to Texas, back to Youngstown and then to Ravenna all while working on his Master's degree in Education Administration, which he received from Kent State University. He spent a year in Dover Ohio as a principal and decided that he liked the classroom and football field better. He was hired in 1958 at Kent Roosevelt and worked there until his retirement in 1984 as a history and civics teacher, coach and then Athletic Director. He worked tirelessly to bring as many sports as possible for boys and girls to the Kent School district. He loved coaching and teaching young people to excel not just in sport but in life. He mentored so many young people and truly enjoyed their successes. If they succeeded, then he succeeded. Tom was inducted into the Ohio State High School coach's Hall of Fame and the Ohio State Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. He was in the 1st class of Kent Roosevelt High School Hall of Fame. After retirement, Tom and Lois traveled the country to sightsee and golf. They were able to see many things that had been put off while raising their family. He even took up skiing for a time and took a number of skiing vacations with friends. Even as his health declined and his eyesight diminished, he never lost his love of sports and continued to watch football, baseball, college basketball and golf when he could. Tom is survived by his five children, Tom (Marty) of Dublin, Tim (Janet) of Milan, Laurie (Tim) Fisher of Omro WI, Mark (Faye) of Springboro, and Matt (Lynda) of Kent. He is further survived by 10 grandchildren, Mike, Steve, Christy, Dan, Stephanie, Tony, Nikki, Alex, Owen and Reese; 5 great-grandchildren, Tommy, Kara, Eva, Eli and Teagan; two sisters, Norma Clemente and Mary Ellen Hoolihan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois, in 2005; his parents; 1 sister, Carmen; and 5 brothers, John, Jerome, George, Ralph and Al. The family would like to thank Altercare of Stow and their staff and doctors for the care and kindness given to Dad. Funeral mass at 12:00 PM Wednesday March 22nd at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kent. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held 1;30-4:30 PM Wednesday, March 22nd at the The Overlook, 1519 Overlook Road, Kent, OH (Twin Lakes). A private family Burial service will be at Standing Rock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lois Campana Nursing Scholarship at Kent Roosevelt High School. We thank the Lord for the gift of this extraordinary man who was a devoted husband and loving father and mentor to so many.

When my dear husband Phil Leslie, who passed away a few months ago, spoke of Coach Campana we could feel what a significant impact he made on Phil through his Highschool years at Roosevelt. Phil had an incredible respect for Coach that stayed with him throughout his life. Thank you Coach for sharing your life with so many.

My sincere sympathy and prayers to the Campana family through this difficult time.

Norma, Mary Ellen and all of Toms Family:

What a Legacy! Less than one percent of all the people that ever walked the face of this earth could muster anywhere near the Legacy and contribution of Tom Campana. To be a relative and or friend is nothing less than an Honor. Because of selfishness we morn the passing of our love ones when we should be celebrating their life of accomplishments. WHAT A MAN! For you young Campana's while you travel the road of life and when you come to a fork in the road and are not sure what way to go, ask yourself which way would Tom Campana have gone and follow his lead. All my life I have been proud to say Tom Campana as well as the rest of the Campana Family are and were my cousins. God bless you all.

TC always greeted me with a huge smile and a powerful handshake with his bent "football" pinky firmly wrapped twice around my hand or elbow. He embraced life and fueld our silliness with his "campiness".

I'm grateful to have known him.

I was so lucky to grow up on the same street, lots of memories playing basketball in the neighborhood with Tom and the flag football games in the empty lot. Always loved Mr. Campana he was so nice to me all those years. In later years everytime he visited Springboro, his son would drive him to my office so we could visit. Miss those visits! Rest in Peace Tom. You are one in a million. Becky Mowen-Hartle

Some months ago, I had the good fortune to spend a bit of time with Tom when John and Carolyn Gunyula brought Tom along to help count the collection one Sunday at St. Patrick. We sat side by side as he drank coffee and caught me up on his life as a widower. Tom was so grateful and upbeat about his years of coaching and leading the athletic programs at Roosevelt HS in Kent. He was full of stories. And Tom shared glowing words of praise for his daughter Laurie and how she never failed to call him every week at the same time. Laurie, he was so proud of you that his buttons were bursting on the front of his shirt. Dear Campana and Fisher family, please know that I am so sorry to learn of Tom's passing. My God comfort you all in your grief.

Tim, Laurie, and family. It's difficult to reason when we lose our loved ones,.. but their memories must not only spur us on , but serve as a reason to do our best and live the best possible life we can! That is what I remember about Coach. He was a motivator, he pushed you and you became better,.. in everything you did. He was a great listener. We are all blessed for having the opportunity to have him in our life.

To all the family of Tom Campana. You will followed the trail of Tom being a friend to me, Tom Jr. was associated with Stan White, and his Father Bill White was like a Father to me. His kids grew up with my kids and they loved him dearly. I will miss him very much as every time I saw him he would say You look more beautiful than the last time I saw you, and give me a kiss. I will remember all those times because he was truly a gentleman and a knight in shining armor. I loved him and will miss him. UPS

I met Tom when I joined the Roosevelt High School faculty in 1971 right out of college. He was warm and welcoming and teased me from day one! I cherish the friendship I had with him and Lois and have very happy memories of him. He was a wise and true friend and mentor to a very young and inexperienced teacher.
I am so fortunate to have known him. Sending sincere condolences to his entire family. Rest In Peace, dear friend.

A GREAT coach and even better person. Used to see him at church when I took my mother when I was in town. He always asked where I was living and about my job. I did not play football but I was one of his students. Here's to you coach and a life well lived! To the family, my deepest condolences.
