Robert Hopkins Obituary

Published by Carmon Windsor Funeral Home on Apr. 2, 2017.
Robert S. Hopkins, Jr. (Breezy, Hop, Hoppy) graduated from this world with honors and distinction on April 2, 2017. His birth during the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 gave him the nickname Breezy. During his early youth he survived the Hartford Circus Fire, polio, and the death of his mother. Hop was deeply intelligent, passionate about an endless number of hobbies and interests, and he had a lifelong love of learning. He was a gifted, kind, and quirky educator who had a special appreciation for people who didn't fit neatly into a box. He remained in contact with students, educators, and staff from his many years of service at South Windsor High School. Just a few of his many interests were: sailing and wooden boats, music from Dixieland jazz to classical to rock, apples, architecture, aviation, vintage autos and motorcycles, food (from fine dining to mystery leftovers, and especially being up to his ears in barbecue), literature, anything to do with words on paper, UCONN women's basketball, creative recycling and digging in the dirt. Each of these led him to fascinating people with whom he maintained personal connections that were very important to him. His dislikes included bureaucracy, bad grammar, mindless consumption, waste, willful ignorance, BS, and Facebook. Hop was deeply loved by his family, including his former wife and best friend Jean, his children Paul (Amy), and Sarah (Jim), grandsons Will and Josh, Luke Hopkins and family, and dear sister Sally Stanwicks and family. With great grace and patience he endured treatment for kidney failure and a variety of other indignities without ever losing his good humor. A celebration of life will be held May 13, 4 PM at City Steam Brewery Cafe. Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice. Better yet, have a great meal with someone you love, or plant a tree.

Bob was the best of neighbors to my Mom and Dad, Barbara and Ted Blow, and a wonderful friend to me and my family. The world has lost a free-thinking, honest man, who never failed to see the humor in any situation. I am grateful to him for his kindness to my parents, and honored to have known him. My deepest sympathies to Jean, Paul, and Sarah. He was a good man.

Hop was such a great person! I work at Davita Dialysis and I loved talking to him about everything from how the machines work to the Uconn Huskies while he was getting his treatment! I will miss him very much :(

My favorite teacher and a good friend. A role model for life, a thoroughly decent man with just the right touch of anarchy. One of my best memories of high school is of my first and last ever one day in school suspension - when Bob came into the suspension room and saw me, he just started laughing. "Tarr, what the heck are you doing here?" We talked for the whole hour, Bob periodically doing his duty by saying "we're really not supposed to be talking here." A very dear man.

He was a good man and will be missed. I don't think he ever met a stranger and he had a great memory for people!

Dusted off the old year book, seems Mr. Hopkins was one of the few people to call me Pete. "Do not abandon your Inquisitiveness!" Words that matched his personality.

He was a wonderful science teacher and mentor. I will always remember our after school chats....he always found time to listen and share his wisdom. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

One of, if not my favorite teacher in High School. Just a little story I always tell about him..... I was late for my first class with him due to senior pictures..... Had my South Windsor Fire Dept CO 5 jacket on when I finally arrived in class. He asked if I was at a fire the night beofre and that is why I was late. I said no I had taken my senior pictures, he then gave me a free pass to be late to any of his classes if I had a fire call the night before as long as I told him about it. He always supported his students that had hobbies or "neat" activities, as he put it.

Mr. Hopkins was one of two great men that I had the pleasure of knowing. I will always long for the last dinner that was on hold for him to be well. His eloquent words always had me on the edge of my seat longing for more. Rest easy my sweet friend. I am only at ease knowing you are no longer suffering. I love you.

Bob was a man with unusual and uncanny insight into all sorts of situations and people. I considered him a Good Friend when we worked together at SWHS. My condolences to all who knew and loved him. Myron Halpin
