Lewis Moorman Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Apr. 29, 2017.
Lewis Jefferson Moorman III ("Jeff") passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 29, surrounded by family. Jeff was born on June 20, 1942 in Washington, D.C., where his father was serving in the Navy, and was raised in San Antonio. He was a graduate of the Choate School in Connecticut and Trinity University in San Antonio. Following college, Jeff began a 35-year career in the securities industry in the San Antonio office of Dewar, Robertson and Pancoast and its successor companies including today's UBS. For 28 years he served on the Board of Trustees of Texas Biomedical Research Institute, serving as Vice Chairman for 15 years. He also served on the Board of Governors of The Argyle Club, a non-profit founded by his mother, Betty Slick Moorman. He was a member of the Order of the Alamo, The German Club and a 50-year member of the Texas Cavaliers. Jeff was a very generous contributor to the San Antonio community, which he loved. Family and friends will remember Jeff as a gentle, happy, and uncomplicated man. His easy laugh and welcoming spirit made anyone feel accepted and comfortable. He successfully survived cancer for 13 years. After a recurrence in January, Jeff continued to fight the disease, refusing to complain. He embraced each day as a precious gift. He loved to hunt and fish but was relieved to give up golf after decades of futility. In his later years, what he enjoyed most was to spend intimate time with his closest family and friends. Jeff recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his marriage to Nancy Wood Moorman. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Ramona, and his father, Lewis J. Moorman, Jr. and mother, Betty Slick Moorman. He is survived by Nancy and their son, Lew Moorman, and his wife Laura, their children Sarah, Reese, and John, by his brother, Tommy, and his wife, Christi, and sister, Susan, and her husband John Kerr, and many nieces and nephews, including his nieces Kathryn Dehlinger and Anne Bluntzer and great niece and nephews, Katie, William, and Michael Dehlinger, whom he loved as his own. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to lifelong friend Sally Helland who has been "family" for 40 plus years. Special thanks also to the incredible care of Dr. Anthony Tolcher of the START center in San Antonio and Dr. John Galan of San Antonio. CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 2017 10:30 AM ST. ANTHONY DE PADUA CATHOLIC CHURCH 102 LORENZ RD. Honorary pallbearers are Clyde Alexander, Walter Baker, Marvin Barenblat, McLean Bowman, Tucker Dorn, Kit Goldsbury. Tres Kleberg, Dickie Longoria, Carlisle Maxwell, Cebe Musgrave, Al Philip, James Seiter, John Tate, Bill Wyatt. In lieu of flowers please direct contributions to Texas Biomedical Research Institute or the charity of your choice.

I was out of the country and unable to attend the service. Very sad to hear about it. I saw him recently but very little since the old days at Brady Creek Ranch with brother Tommy and the earlier days growing up on Elizabeth Rd. He was a really good guy and fun to be around. So sorry he's gone.

Nancy, it is often I think back of Jeff and I casting to eddies in Big Creek on the ABarA Ranch in Wyoming, and of the kids, Jeff included, sliding down the snowy mountainsides in Rocky Mountain National Park on hand-held cardboard sleds. He was a joyous adventure. God bless him, and you, and your family, and keep all of you in the palms of His hands forever. Fred Shannon
