Gregory D. Winter Obituary Gregory D. Winter, 68, of Westfield NJ died peacefully in his sleep on Monday July 3, 2017 while on vacation in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Visitation will be at Gray Funeral Home in Westfield on Thursday July 20 from 4-8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday July 21 at 11 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 414 E. Broad Street in Westfield. An interment ceremony for family and friends will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements are by Gray's Funeral Directors, Westfield. You may go to grayfuneralhomes.com for on line condolences. Greg lived in Newark NJ during his early years and then moved to Iselin NJ with his family during his teenage years. He attended high school at Seton Hall Prep and undergraduate school at Rutgers University. After college, he worked for Kemper Insurance Company in Summit where he met his beloved wife Linda (Gillie) Winter. While at Kemper, he obtained his M.B.A. degree at Rutgers and then left Kemper to study law at New York Law School in Manhattan, New York. After being admitted to the New Jersey Bar, he joined the law firm of Methfessel and Werbel in Rahway NJ. A few years later, Greg and a colleague began their own law partnership, Winter & Winkler, with offices in Livingston, NJ. He retired from the law firm in 2014 after thirty-two years. Greg was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Broad Street in Westfield. He served the Church as Warden for several years in the 1990's, faithfully attended church services and chaperoned summer youth volunteer trips. He also represented the Episcopal Church in New Jersey in various legal cases and developed an expertise in that area. Greg looked after his mother, caring for her until his death. He was a very loving and devoted son. He loved to spend time with his wife Linda who passed away in November 2012. They enjoyed vacations in Cape Cod every summer as well as taking trips to the Outer Banks NC and weekend getaways to Annapolis Maryland and Wilmington DE. Greg and Linda were avid football fans and held Giants season tickets for many years. They would generously take Linda's nephews and niece to games each year including the famous snowball game. Greg also loved to be with family never missing family get-togethers for birthdays, weddings, sports events, dance recitals, holidays and clam bakes with Linda's cousins at the beach. He loved to read and had a special interest in books about the civil war period. He had a great ability to remember all sorts of facts and details – you could always ask him an historical question and he would have the answer. Greg was predeceased by his wife Linda, his father George Winter and his sister Georgeanne (Winter) Pearsall. He is survived by his mother Anne Mary (Semenock) Winter of Iselin NJ, brother-in-law Bruce Gillie and his wife Dana of Scotch Plains NJ, nephew Jeffrey Gillie of Encinitas CA, nephew Douglas Gillie and his wife Ashley of San Diego CA, and niece Christine (Gillie) Mahoney and her husband Mathew of Branchburg NJ. He is also survived by his sister's children, niece Coleen Fletcher and husband Gregg of Budd Lake NJ, niece Maureen Pearsall of Great Meadow NJ and nephew Robert Pearsall of Morristown NJ. I got to know Greg through St. Michael's Chapel at Rutgers in New Brunswick, where Rev. Clarence Lambelet was rector, when I was at Douglass College. I've had no contact with him since then, but for some reason Greg popped into my head last summer and I thought it would be fun to look him up and catch up on 40 years. I had thought he was going to go to divinity school and become an Episcopal priest, so I was searching the internet for "Rev." When I didn't find him, I gave up, got busy...Then a few days ago, Greg popped into my head again. This time I searched without "Reverend" attached. I was stunned and saddened to learn that he'd passed away! Greg was a very sweet guy, very smart, very witty and wonderfully kind and thoughtful. I remember that he loved the beauty of the Book of Common Prayer. My prayers are with all of Greg's loved ones. Rest in peace, Greg.

I had not spent much time with Greg, my cousin, since his family visited us in many years ago in Washington State. My daughter and I came to visit his mother, my aunt Anne earlier this year for several days. It was good to catch up on his life and to enjoy his wonderful sense of humor which I think came from his dad, my uncle George. He was taking such amazing care of his mom. I know her really loved Cape Cod and it's fitting that he was at a place he loved when he passed away. Uncle George and Greg are probably in heaven, sharing jokes with each other. He was a fine man and a devoted son.

I am so happy that I was able to spend some time with my cousin last December. I had not seen him in years. It was great being with him. He will be missed by many people.

My heart is broken - I just googled Mr. Winter so that my daughters could send him a note as they miss him. We were fortunate enough to live next door and "Mr. Greg" was so incredibly kind to my girls - every day when he got home from work, they would run to the fence yelling "Mr. Greg!" He was such a gift to our family and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to all of you at this sad and difficult time. With love, Simon, Karlie, Charlotte & Lucie Jessop

A grateful client, who valued his counsel and friendship. I did much research in choosing the right attorney, he exceeded my expectations in all aspects. May he be richly rewarded for his genuine kindness and unfailing support of so many worthy causes.

Was an honor to have known Greg and to have worked for him. When I first started working for him I knew "nothing" about the legal field and he was one of the few (rare) attorneys who was willing to train me. I will always be grateful for that! He was one of the kindest, most genuine and intelligent persons I have ever met. I am sure he will be missed by all who knew him! R.I.P. Greg Winter
