Anne H. Carroll

Anne Carter Harrison Carroll of West Hartford, wife of Robert E. Carroll, Jr, died peacefully on Friday July, 28 at age 91. She was born February 8, 1926 in Plainfield, New Jersey, daughter of Marjorie (Thompson) and E. Randolph Harrison. Anne was proud of her North-South heritage, a blend of New England Thompsons and Virginian Harrisons. She grew up in West Hartford, attended local schools and graduated from William Hall High School in 1943. She went with several classmates to Mary Washington College in Virginia and later transferred to the University of Kentucky, where she joined the Tri-Delta sorority. Her junior and senior years were at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY where she graduated in 1948 with a BS degree in physical education. Anne and Bob married on September 11, 1948 and were looking forward to their 69th wedding anniversary. Anne would be happiest to be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always smiling and full of adventure. Anne spent many years teaching and coaching physical education, was an active volunteer at Hartford Hospital for 37 years, and a member of the Junior League. She was also a member of the Town & County Club, Farmington Country Club, and Eastward Ho! golf club on Cape Cod. While living in the Netherlands during 1973 and 1974, she and her husband traveled widely in Europe, and visited Egypt and East Africa. Anne leaves many friends from their neighborhood in Chatham on Cape Cod, where since the early 80's she spent most summers. Physically active, Anne enjoyed tennis, golf, and skiing. A cabin in Vermont was the base for New England skiing, while a daughter in Colorado took them out west. She and Bob joined English and Dutch friends to ski in Austria, Switzerland, and the French Alps. She was predeceased by her brother Edmund Randolph Harrison, Jr of Rochester NY, and her sister Helene Herceg of Rio Rancho, NM. She is survived by her husband, children: Catherine Gray and husband David of Bedford, MA, Amy Parker and husband Lee of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Robert Carroll and wife Kathleen of Farmington, CT, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 11 AM, First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main St., West Hartford, CT.
