Elizabeth (Cleveland) Lackey died on Friday, September 8, 2017 at her home in Groton, Massachusetts. She was 85. Elizabeth, known to all as "Esu," was born on June 18, 1932 in New Rochelle, New York, to J. Luther Cleveland and Elizabeth Ames Cleveland. She grew up in Pelham, New York and attended the Masters School in Tarrytown, New York and was graduated from Connecticut College. She married Frank Danby Lackey III in Westchester County on June 9, 1956. They were married 61 years and are survived by a large and loving family. Esu earned a master's degree and a doctorate in divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School of Cambridge, Massachusetts. A loving mother and dedicated wife with a profound love of dogs and mystery novels, she was always open to new ideas and devoted much of her life to advancing social justice and raising awareness of the role of class and institutional bias in limiting opportunity for women and the poor. She was ahead of her time in many ways. Her family and friends will miss her intelligence, warm spirit and discerning eye for truth. Private services will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: On The Rise, Inc. 341 Broadway Cambridge, Massachusetts. www.ontherise.org

It has been six years
I still mourn the loss of my dear friend. Especially today. The anniversary of her tragic death.

An open door, a warm smile, and gentle laughter. That's how I was greeted every visit. It was always a great day when I went to visit Dan and Esu. Her love of dogs, fondness for the lake and pride in her home and landscaping is what we often talked about. She would get laughing at times with that "laughter coming from the gut" she was a genuinely a deeply caring and passionate person. I am blessed to have gotten to know and spend time with Esu, Dan and her family.
My prayers are with the family XOXO

Esu was a beloved student of mine in the Feminist Liberation Theology program of the Episcopal Divinity School. Over the years, she became one of my dearest friends and a sister sojourner whom I admired, learned from and loved deeply. Her intense interest in intersections of race, class, and gender and in her own social privilege as an affluent white woman (interest and privilege that I shared) served often to galvanize others to join happily in the ongoing struggles for social justice. Esu will be badly missed. But her spirit will inspire more that she could possible imagine to carry on the important work of her life. Dear sister, you'll be with us and live through us forever. Adelante!

We are grieving over the loss of such friends as Esu and Dan. Esu held the women of On The Rise in her heart since the very early days when this organization was first founded in the mid-90s, and stayed warmly connected and supportive through our decades of service http://www.ontherise.org/. We feel lucky that her warmth and wisdom and generosity lifted up this community for so long, and terribly sad to lose her and Dan. Now our hearts are with your family, as we have seen too many times in On The Rise's work, what awful shade is cast by violence. Wishing you strength and courage.
