Clara Lamm Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Oct. 3, 2017.
On Tuesday, October 3, 2017 Clara Belle Lamm, age 85, joined her Lord. She was born April 12, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas to Hilda Mary Stautzenberger and Edwin Oscar Lamm. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin O. Lamm; mother, Hilda S. Lamm; brother, Gerald A. Lamm; and sister, Bernice Bertha Lamm. She is survived by siblings LeRoy Wilfred Lamm, Denis Edwin Lamm and Earl David Lamm, wife Judith Winterburn Lamm; nieces Sharon Lamm Meiher, Susan Lamm Wyatt, Cheryl Lamm Real, Deborah Lamm Smith, Pam Lamm Zaiontz; nephews Richard Lamm and Glenn Darrell Lamm; 15 great nieces and nephews; and 9 great-great nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great niece. As Clara grew up, she matured at an early age of eleven, helping her mother supervise her siblings after her father passed away. One story Clara enjoyed repeating was when she was young, she was asked by her teachers why her hands had ink on them. She'd answer that she and her sister helped roll newspapers each morning for her brother's newspaper route. She would recount how she and her siblings baked bread daily for their meals from rationed supplies during the war; and her family would never turn away a hungry friend from the table. Being a teen, Clara enjoyed having her friends over to play cards, or listening and dancing to the latest hits on the radio, and of course, the many high school girls slumber parties. She graduated in 1950 from St. Gerard's Catholic School. When USAA was formed, Clara was one of the first 150 employees hired by the company. Her employer, Brigadier General Robert F. McDermott, was present often at work where he asked the female employees to dance with servicemen weekly at the USO. Clara worked for USAA as an executive, being promoted many times, as well as being supervisor for 40 people for a total of 43 years. She retired from USAA with many accomplishments and awards sporting her name. The Lord was a very important part of her life; attending St. Paul's Catholic Church, and in later years attending St. Francis of Assisi each Sunday as a priority in her life. She supported her artistic mother with her many crafts at church, church bazaars and at home. She traveled abroad and within the USA numerous times with her family members and/or friends. She enjoyed her vacations, the many educational and scenic tours she had read about in depth prior to visiting and was elated to tell others of her travels. Clara sewed literally hundreds of quilts and clothing which she donated to various charities, friends, family and "September 11" survivors in New York. She also monetarily supported many charities inside and outside of the United States. In the 1980s, Clara purchased waterfront property at Canyon Lake where she enjoyed being host for family, co-workers and friends at her vacation home. She would prepare tasty meals for her guests and ensured they felt at home. Family has always been important for Clara. She and her sister attended their nieces' and nephews' football, volleyball, baseball, basketball and soccer games, along with award ceremonies, dances, band performances, graduations, birthdays and other special events. Clara and her sister babysat her nieces and nephews often, sometimes taking them to plays, movies, the zoo, the lake or to feed the ducks at the park. Clara, we love you and miss you. You were a treasured gem in our lives. Rest in peace. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 9, 2017 at Porter Loring Mortuary North. My cousin, Clara, along with her sister, Bernice, and brother, Gerald, also helped tremendously with taking care of me and my two sisters, Alice and Ruby, while we were growing up in San Antonio. Thank you, Clara, for your guidance and support during our formative years. Rest in peace dear cousin. Sincerely, Nancy (Stautzenberger) O'Brien of Houston, TX

Clara was my very first supervisor at USAA in 1972! I retired with a 42 year career. I remembered her as a quiet lady who got the work done. RIP.

Clara and I were good friends all during high school at St. Gerard's I remember some good times with Clara and especially at her house. Her mom was always so kind to all of us and put up with our teenage silliness. I send my sincere sympathy to all of her family.

Clara and I were good friends all through high school at St. Gerard's. I had lost contact with her during the last few years but remember some of the fun times spent at her house. I send my sympathy to all of her family.
