Ronald E. Smacchi, 78, of Northampton, Pa., passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in the Browntown section of Pittston Twp. to the late Sante and Silia Giusepponi Smacchi. He was a graduate of Pittston Twp. High School, class of 1956, and King's College. After high school and throughout college, he worked at his family's restaurant, the Glider Inn, in Pittston Twp. He then spent 33 years employed at Royal Insurance in Wilkes-Barre and Allentown as a litigation manager before retiring in 1998. He was also a member of the Pittston Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept.
Ron had a passion for the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, making wine and simply taking his dog, Buzz, for long walks. He also loved traveling, especially to visit relatives in Italy. However, his ultimate joy was his family. Never one to shy away from offering his wisdom, he always wanted you to leave the conversation with more knowledge than you had at the start.
In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by his sister, Nora Mazzarella; and his brother, Louis Smacchi.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Smacchi, R.N., who provided him with exceptional and loving care every day throughout his illness. He is also survived by his daughter, Danielle and her husband, Michael Bulzoni, Duryea; son, David and his wife, Nancy Smacchi, Shavertown; grandchildren, Giovanna and Dominic Smacchi, and Macelia Bulzoni; former wife, Phyllis Smacchi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, his service will be private.
