Huard Eldridge Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Oct. 18, 2017.
Huard was born on September 22, 1934 IN San Antonio, Texas to Bernice Hargis Eldridge and Arthur Mosley Eldridge. After a hard-fought battle with Parkinson's disease, he died on October 18, 2017. Huard graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1952, where he was a member of the Mighty Mules football team. In 1958 he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Business Administration. During a break in his studies, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Army in Germany as a Radio Specialist. In 1967 he married Earl Fae Cooper and while living in Olmos Park served one term as Mayor. Huard worked for GE Capital, served as President of Associates General, Inc. and worked with the Conservation Society in developing and restoring the Staake Stevens Building on Commerce Street and the Albert Maverick Building on Houston Street. His career continued as the "Glass Doctor" and in Specialty Advertising and Promotions with Joseph Strange Company, where he used his imagination and creativity to serve his Fiesta San Antonio Commission friends. Celebrating San Antonio and Fiesta was one of his greatest joys. He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years Marilyn Allen Cazort Chrisman Eldridge of San Antonio; and his brother, William Arthur (Bill) Eldridge; and daughters, Beth and her husband, Patrick Brannen of Colorado, and their children, Holly and husband, Don Addington of Fort Worth and their children. He was the "Bonus Dad" to Allen McIntosh Cazort and his partner Molly Kelly of Austin, Cynthia Cazort Collins and her husband Taylor Collins and grandchildren Julia Tate Collins and Chole Taylor Collins, all of San Antonio. Also, survived by his great friend Ramona Zamora and her son Luis Armando Rodriguez of San Antonio, sister-in-law Laura Jane Allen Klise and son Todd Allen Hallmark of San Antonio and daughter Katherine Jane Klise and her children Sophie and Ash of Dallas; Joan Collins Wyatt and husband Richey and their sons, Henry and Taylor; Godson David M. Johnson, son of his forever friends Ellen and Milton Johnson, all of his beloved Hargis, Briscoe and Weir first cousins and lots of good friends and supportive colleagues. Huard enjoyed membership in the Texas Cavaliers and took special pride in being a member of the Horse Platoon and being Day Aide to his longtime friend King Antonio LXIV John K. (Jack) Meyer. He enjoyed being a member of the Order of The Alamo, the German Club and the Conopus Club. A renowned chef and enthusiastic host, Huard could be seen daily at Central Market preparing for his Paella Parties and other festive events. He also enjoyed his long term association with "The Supper Club" and relished the enduring friendships of the Buzzini, Fitch, Harrison, Johnson and Nevitt families. The time he spent with his grandchildren, Luis, Julia, and Chloe, along with their friends, brought the biggest smile to his face. The family expresses special thanks to his incredible team of Caregivers, and to Mary and Phil Reininger for their care and concern during his extended illness. Many thanks to Debbi Chesney, Kakie Dehlinger, Carrie Green and Cristina Wheeler for their help with arrangements. A Memorial Service, officiated by the Reverend Taylor Boone will be held on Sunday, October 22nd at 4:30 PM at Club Giraud, 707 N. St. Mary's St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation, 1250 NE Loop 410 Suite 234, San Antonio 78209; Corazon Ministries c/o Travis Park United Methodist Church, 230 E. I was very sad to read about the passing of Mr. Eldridge. What a nice gentleman and always had a smile! He was always so pleasant and courteous to me, my family, and employees. I am so glad I got to know him. I know you are filled with great memories. May God bless Mr. Eldridge and may God bless you during this time of sadness. Many fun and fond memories of Huard.... a special neighbor on Park Hill....a totally wrapped mummy at a Halloween street party.
I don't think I ever saw him without a smile on his face.

Ed DeWees counted Huard as one of his dearest friends, and I did too! He had many talents, but at the top of the list was his friendly smile and readines to greet his friends. Much love to you, Marilyn, and to all your family, Becky.

I have known Huard since high school (where he and Barbara were classmates) and always considered him a good friend, although we haven't seen much of each other for quite a few years. We were at UT Austin at the same time (majoring in beer drinking) and we enlisted in the Army together on the same day in 1954 (much to the consternation of our parents). We were shipped off to Fort Bliss for basic training and then were sent to duty stations, he to Germany and I to Seattle. That 2-year experience is where we both "grew up!" What a wonderful outlook on life he had; I don't believe I ever saw him lose his cool and he made friends with just about everyone he came across. We will miss him and send our thoughts and prayers to Marilyn and his family.
