Evelyn Pronko Cheplick, 98, a resident of Olyphant and formerly of Peckville, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at the Green Ridge Health Center, Scranton, following an illness. She was the widow of John Cheplick who died in 2009.
Born in the "Grassy" section of Olyphant on Nov. 19, 1919, daughter of the late Wasyl and Tecla Zinsky Pronko, she was a graduate of Olyphant High School and Lackawanna Business College and was a devoted member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church in Olyphant. She worked as a secretary in state government offices in Scranton and also for Steve Pronko Jewelers in Dickson City.
She was a loving wife, dedicated mother and supporter of her children's activities as they were growing up. She was active in her community and served as a Girl Scout troop leader and was also a member of athletic Booster Clubs. She enjoyed music and loved to sing, especially when accompanied by her son Steve on his harmonica.
She is survived by her four children, Stephen and wife, Chiyoko Kauai, of Scott Twp., Pa.; Susan Cheplick and husband, Tom Daniels, of Leverett, Mass.; John Cheplick and wife, Tina, of San Anselmo, Calif.; and Tina Cheplick of Novato, Calif.; five grandchildren, Thomas, Alex and Stefan Cheplick, and Rose and John Daniels; 28 nieces and nephews; and several dozen grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
The youngest of nine children, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna and Mary; and six brothers, William, Peter, Steve, John, George and Nicholas.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Turko & Sons Funeral Home, 404 Susquehanna Ave., Olyphant, with Divine Liturgy at 10 in SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, River St., Olyphant, to be celebrated by the Rev. Nestor Iwasiw, pastor. Interment, Parish Cemetery, Peckville. Friends may call Monday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a Parastas service at 6:30.
