Robert Edward de Poortere Air Force veteran, Bell Labs consultant, Green Village husband and father of six Robert "Bob" de Poortere, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, after a brief illness, at Morristown Medical Center. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St., Madison, N.J. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Christ the King, 16 Blue Mill Rd., New Vernon, N.J. Interment will follow at St. Vincent's Cemetery, Madison. Bob was born on Feb. 21, 1934, in Newark, N.J., to the late Cathleen Dunleavy and Alfred dePoortere. He was raised in Newark and Green Village, N.J., and settled in Green Village after he married his wife of 59 years, Maureen Merrigan, of Manhattan, N.Y. Bob served our country during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force and worked in the Bell System for over 30 years until he retired in 1991 as a consultant for Bell Laboratories. He was a founding member of Christ the King Church in New Vernon and also served as a police officer for Harding Township. Bob spent much of his free time coaching baseball and softball. He was a former president of the AOH and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Morristown, N.J. Bob was predeceased by his brother, Alfred, and sisters, Mildred and Mary. Bob is survived by his wife; his brother, Richard; his six sons, their wives, and 12 grandchildren.
