Inurnment of his cremated remains will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon in Folden Lutheran Church Cemetery. David Allen Simpkins— Dave, 70, left behind a lot of family, friends, and unfinished projects when he died suddenly on February 23. Born to June (Olson) Simpkins in Watertown, S.D., on September 9, 1947, Dave grew up in Minneapolis and died in Vining, Minn., on the farm where he spent his summers as a child with his beloved grandparents, Clarence and Hilda Olson, and later built his dream home. He graduated from Wayzata High School in 1965, from Dunwoody in 1967, and joined the Army, where he took advantage of every opportunity to advance in rank, education, and leadership skills. The GI Bill took him through journalism school at the University of Minnesota. He took up photography in the Army and never stopped studying and practicing the art, incorporating it into a successful career as a newspaper publisher. Dave invested his time, money and ingenuity in every town he adopted. In Elbow Lake, he founded the Sodbuster newspaper and later published the Grant County Herald, making it the first weekly newspaper west of the Mississippi to use computers and desktop publishing. Ever an enthusiastic Norwegian, he sparked the birth of the annual Flekkefest there. In Sauk Centre he published the Sauk Centre Herald and later developed a partnership with his employees, going on to establish Star Publications, which publishes the Dairy Star, Sauk Centre Herald, Melrose Beacon, Albany Enterprise, Sauk Rapids Herald, Benton County News, and Country Acres. He also transformed Minnesota Bike Trails into the Minnesota Trails Magazine and served as president of the Lake Wobegon Trails Association. In Sauk Centre, Dave was most proud of helping to establish a community foundation and to save the Carnegie library, and of bringing internet access to town. Over the years, Dave became an expert on Sauk Centre native son Sinclair Lewis. He spoke honoring the author in NYC, SC, and on television, and was completing a book based on the author's childhood diaries. Dave is survived by his wife, Linda; sons Eric (Allison) Sharkey Simpkins of Minneapolis, and Michael Simpkins (Megan Feuerherd) of Gladstone, OR; granddaughters, Marie and Lucia, "the Grand Adorables"; sisters, Connie Simpkins and Robin Alaryan of Plymouth, MN; brother-in-law, Kent Fletcher of Lafayette, IN; and many cousins he considered close family. He was preceded in death by his mother, June (Olson) Simpkins; ex-wife, Roberta (Wilson) Simpkins; brother, James Simpkins; and sister, Bonnie Koursh. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Sauk Centre Community Foundation. Online memorials can be made via www.communitygiving.org/donate and list SCACF Dave Simpkins in the memo. I was shocked to hear if Daves death. He was so full of life. I have not been a part of his life for over 22 years, but I was his Annie in his newspaper editorial for a couple of years and he was very special to me then. God Bless his grandchildren and children and always know he was a force in life and a role model for all of you.

Dave was an energizer bunny of enthusiasm for the Stearns County parks and trails system. Besides reporting the news he helped create the news as a park commissioner and tireless trail advocate. May Dave enjoy the peace of eternal life with Christ. Thank you Lord for the gift he has been to us all.

Dave regularly sent me encouraging e-mails and helped me tell the story of Albert Belz, a young Sauk Centre soldier who died from the flu 100 years ago. With Daves help, Belz became chapter 2 in my new book Minnesota 1918. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this charismatic, big-hearted storyteller.

Mike & family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Mike, it's been a very long time -- but you might remember me as a TRAM buddy in the days of Team Harvey (it feels like a lifetime ago)! Harvey stumbled upon your Dad's obituary, and passed it along to me. We send to you our deepest condolences. Your father was an amazingly kind man.

Linda, Eric and Michael we are so sad to hear about Dave. We haven't been in contact for some time but we have many great memories being in Elbow Lake together. Dave was always full of ideas and sounds like he accomplished many of them. I remember our families going to the headwaters of the Mississipp and jumping over the river. Keep all your memories close to your heart and your Dad will always be there. Love you all,
Dave and Bev

Linda -
What a shock! So sorry for your loss. Dave was one of a kind. He was so helpful to the late Jerry Barker and myself as we tried to research family history. The Olson family has lost a great genealogist and a dedicated, honest and true gentleman--sort of a family Patriarch. He will be deeply missed.

Dave's death shocked me to the core. To me, he was the epitome of Minnesota with his love of community, nature, and life, his great curiosity, and Scandinavian heritage. His work on Sinclair Lewis is important, and deserves to be finished and published. A great friend, a man of peace, generous and kind--a real Mensch!

Linda and family, sending you love from Boise. I will always be glad to have known and worked with Dave. Although we hadn't talked in more than 10 years, I can hear his laugh, and recall his enthusiasm for new ideas, for people, for open space and this beautiful world we share. I am honored to have played a small part in helping Dave realize his wish to bring stories of people and trails to so many people through MN Trails magazine. Sending love and prayers.

I remember how much we laughed when we talked, and how we'd bounce ideas back and forth. This was when I was at the newspaper foundation and he was on my board. He did sales training for newspapers thru MNF that was really great. He was both shrewd and highly creative, not a combination you see very often in the same person. I appreciated that about him. So glad to have known him.

It was an honor and delight to get to know Dave a little bit throughout the past decade through his daughter-in-law and son from the wedding festivities to Allison's annual work fundraisers to Allison and Eric's recent going-away party. I always looked forward to hearing what he'd been up to whenever we'd meet, and I enjoyed seeing all of his photos and stories on Facebook. I still have a PDF of a draft of a Sinclair Lewis piece he was working on waiting on my desktop. His creative energy and enthusiasm seemed to know no bounds! His adoration of and dedication to his grandchildren was so sweet. They lost him far too early, but will have SO many memories to treasure and talk about because he made spending time with them such a top priority. Hugs to Linda, Eric, Allison, Mike, Megan, Marie, Lucia, and the rest of his family and friends during this very difficult time.

I have many memories of Dave . The last are of a round table discussion at the Palmer House in Sauk Centre . He also explained to us a mural that had been painted about the history of Sauk Centre . He was interested in many things . I did my deer hunting in Iowa , but loved the photos he posted of the meals they served at their farm to the deer hunters . Last summer i was invited to a Sons of Norway event at his farm , the second time i had the privilege . I got to enjoy the time with him and with other interesting people . On one occasion he and Linda came to Wadena and toured our family farm house and we had a walleye dinner . The last time i saw him was that evening in July in Sauk Centre . Very interesting man and we did trade messages once in awhile about our projects . I might also add that i saw him in action as a grandpa with his small girls , the "adorables" . I have two small granddaughters about that age , so i can really relate to how much he loved them and cared about them . He will be deeply missed . Sending my sympathy to all the family . He left a deep void . He will be missed . May he rest in Gods' loving arms .

Dave was a character that was well respected around Elbow Lake. He was always a joy to visit with and had a great sense of humor. His brainstorming was always appreciated. "See you around campus", my friend.

I am oh so sorry for the sudden death of Dave. He had an enthusiasm that was contagious. He was the classic Norwegian, grounded in his Lutheran heritage, open to other religions, proud of family and friends, always working to build relationships. He would enjoy a good laugh and easily saw through the quirks of life and was always enamored of the goodness that he found wherever he went, with whomever he was. He loved nature, Lake Wobegon trail, his farm, and Linda, his dear wife and family, especially his grandchildren. he will be missed far and wide. SJosue
