Rex Estill
Cottonwood, CA
Rex Estill, age 79 of Cottonwod, CA, passed away Feburary 22nd 2018 at Mercy Medical Center Redding after a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 46 ? years, Patricia Estill(Pat), his brother Charles Solano (Helen) of Ventura, CA, his sons Allan O'Neil (Kitty) of Smithville, TX, Ned Estill (Stephanie) of Redding, CA, and Ben Estill (Renee) of Palo Cedro, CA, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Rex was born on April 19th 1938 to Oscar and Nada Estill in Ventura, CA, the youngest of four children. He was raised and attended school in Ventura prior to serving in the U.S. Navy. He returned to Ventura once his term of enlistment was up and earned an Associate's Degree in welding from Ventura City College. He moved to Cottonwood, CA in 1970 to help care for his parents who had moved to the area several years prior. Rex was employed by several local lumber and paper product mills, before retiring from Tennaco in Red Bluff, CA as a pipefitter in 2000.
Rex was a talented woodcarver, or as he put it, "a whittler". He loved to do special projects for friends and family, but always explained that they might get the requested piece or they might get "a pile of chips!" He also loved the sea and lived for a time in Santa Barbara harbor on a converted landing craft during the 1960's. He traded the Pacific Ocean for the Sacramento River after moving to the North State and could often be found on the river in any one of a collection of small boats. Rex was a kind, gentle, and humble man who loved, and was loved by, his family and friends.
As per his wishes, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will be held by his family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to a favorite charity in Rex's name.

When I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with the Estill's, it was like having an extension to my own family. Interacting with Rex was like having a 2nd father figure in my life and he will be missed by far more people whose lives he touched and positively impacted than mine alone. My condolences and love go out to the family.
