John Coy Obituary

John Coy III was born in Tampa, Florida, on December 19, 1970, to his mother Brenda Robinson and father John Coy II. He was educated in the Hillsborough County School District where he graduated from Armwood High School. He then matriculated to Bethune-Cookman College on a football scholarship; coached by the great Larry Little, he played the position of linebacker and he was a team captain for the Wildcats football team. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. John enjoyed good times with his family and friends, and when not working, enjoyed relaxing by the water, fishing, attending his children's activities and playing cards. He began his career as a Corrections Officer with the state of Florida in 1994. He rose through the ranks and attained the rank of Captain in 2008. He worked for the department of corrections for almost 24 years where he was beloved and well respected by many; as well as a cherished mentor to many. John's legacy will be carried on by his loving children and family. To many he was just simply Uncle John. John was preceded in death by his grandfather James Robinson and beloved grandmother Evelyn Robinson. John leaves behind his loving family: Gwendolyn Coy (loving wife and best friend), his son and daughter Jalen Coy and Johnetta Coy, his mother Brenda Robinson (Tampa, FL), father John Coy II (Tampa,FL), sister Glynis Coy (Tampa, FL), brother Cory Robinson & family, brother Rashaad Robinson & family (Tampa, FL), Cousin/Sister Tiffany Bland (Tampa, FL), brother Travis Coy & family (Tampa, FL), sister Nya Coy Cook & family (Tampa, FL) and a host of beloved aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that became family. Viewing is on Thursday, March 8, 2017 and will be held at Herbert Thompson Funeral Home, 901 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, from 5-8:30 pm. The services are on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Hope Fellowship Church, 869 Derbyshire Rd., Daytona Beach, FL 32117. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

We are so heartbroken to have lost you Captain John Coy, I remember starting our careers together, and going to the academy together so many years ago. I was so proud of you every time they pinned you to move up in ranks. You have touched so many lives here, as a strong leader, and a compassionate man of God. May you now rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord. We know you will watch over all of us here at Tomoka, as you always did as a leader. Rest in Peace John you earned your place in heaven.
