FINN--Martin,
died peacefully in White Plains, NY, on the 16th of March, 2018. He was 93 years old. Born to Frederick and Hattie Finn on February 28th, 1925 in New York City, Martin attended Columbia Grammar High School with his elder brother Allen. His accomplishments at Columbia merited him a number of accolades, including being selected as an All-City soccer player and earning the number one spot on the school chess team. Martin graduated from high school in 1943 and was admitted to Yale University, with plans to eventually study law. However, on July 1st of that year, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the European theater. Martin saw combat action as a member of the 103rd Infantry Division, 410th Infantry, 2nd Platoon, 2nd squad, Charlie Company. Additionally, due to his fluency in French, he served as translator for his commanding officer. Martin, alongside the captain of his division, was captured near midnight in a French farmhouse on November 29th, 1944. He was transported to Stalag VII-A, just north of Moosberg, and remained there as a German prisoner of war until April 30th, 1945. Subject to severe deprivation during his time as a prisoner, Martin was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for Bravery after his liberation in 1945. Martin married Suzanne Straus in December of 1948. The couple had two sons, Robert and Stephen, and raised them in their home in Scarsdale, NY. Martin spent the rest of his working life in the family's importing business, taking over for his father after he suffered a stroke. Later in life he became an avid and accomplished artist, creating a large portfolio of portraits and landscapes in oil. Martin Finn is survived by his sons, his daughters-in-law Daryl and Denise, and his grandchildren, Kate, Meggie, Billy, Emily, and Dan. Quiet, thoughtful, intelligent, and exceedingly kind, Martin is an American hero and a role model for us all. He will be missed dearly by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. The family is holding a private celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
